Stupid surveys

Latest pet peeve: Who "designs" surveys where you are presented with a question which does not apply to you with multiple choice answers - none of which can be chosen - and then make it mandatory that you choose one of the options before you can save the survey? For example: Do you use Lightswitch? Answer - No. If you use Lightswitch, which of the following reasons is why? A. It's fantastic. B. It will bring world peace. C. My company makes me. Obviously since I already said I don't use it, none of those answers are the reason why I use it. Simple logic. However, I must choose one before I can save the survey.

But if he didn't answer surveys, what would he do while waiting for the next lounge topic to be posted? :-D

Is that a multiple choice question?

Yep, typical survey fail. In that instance I would choose C. make them think you are being forced to, and not want to through your own free will! Alternatively, just abort and not bother :)

Well, unfortunately that wasn't really one of the options. It would have been a good one though. They were all more like the first two options. So I picked the one that seemed the least offensive. I suppose they do this so even the people who don't use it but respond to the survey vote for one of their supposed advantages. Either that or if they were honest and ethical they would filter out the response from people who said they didn't use it. (Yeah, right.)

These things usually have an 'other' option with a text box for you to use. I mostly type "Now please wash your hands" in there and proceed. Mostly in an westerly direction, occasionally southerly but mostly to the west.

Unfortunately many surveys I see lately don't have an Other choice. They are the ones I'm complaining about.

Sounds like it should be multiple choice. I respond to surveys for the same reason everyone else does - to get a chance to win something and to get my name on sales email lists. The second reason is why I use my work email address and not my home one. It's also why don't just abort the survey when I run into these kind of questions. If it was a survey I really wanted to answer truthfully (sorry, I can't think of an example) then I probably would just abort the survey.

Received a couple of surveys from a major political party that I refused to fill out because of lack of choice. Example: Will you vote for: 1)The president 2) A republican. Maybe I will vote for Snoopy (he is running again isn't he :) ) but they do not give me a choice.

I didn't provide multiple choice answers because some of them might violate the lounge's KSS rule and I'll leave that to someone else. :-D

At work we are using a survey tool that lets you hide/show sections based on answers to questions, however it doesn't have any validation. Admins are supposed to manually validate the data after it is entered and contact the user for updates. :omg:

How about a recent MSDN survey that wanted you to rank things from a list of 30+ items and none were that relevant. I can just imagine a marketing guy calling up engineering asking for sample questions and getting a list while the engineers are laughing in the background. Enter Python: "I told him we already got one."

I remember answering one, some time ago, where, if you answered the 2nd of those questions, an error would pop up saying something like "Hey - I thought you said you didn't use Lightswitch? What gives?" Trouble was, I then spent more time answering silly answers to see the types of responses I could elicit than thinking about 'real' answers
