So we have this system I sort of inherited, I don't do much to it but now and then if someone does something stupid to a server then I have to get it going again. Came in this morning, a call logged that it is down. A quick look and it has been down since 17:32 on 2nd February. Very nearly an entire week ago. And now they have just noticed. So I'm working away, found the problem, trying to work out why it happened before bringing it back up. A note gets added to the call, this is affecting normal business working and requires urgent attention now. Yeah, really urgent that it takes you a week to notice that the thing aint working. I'm off to the little boys room for a bit, I think this can wait.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

So busy they were typing away for a week before noticing! Actually, possibly not unusual. We had a NAS box back up system that went nearly a month before someone discovered it had fallen over. (I managed to keep that one quiet and got it working again with no harm done).

Oh yes. My current mood is not being helped by the new firewalls that were installed last night and which have stopped any of my mobile users (around 40) from using their systems. They notice things are not working very early on, and are very shouty about it. Of course as the calls rained in this morning no-one in support was able to make the link between new firewalls and connections into the company not working until I got here.

Shirely only after it was expected to have run - every company I have worked at has had processes that run only at diariesd times which are critical, but it is only when they don't run does it become important that the service is down. Who cares that the payroll generator sever is down for 27 days a month as long as it is working the one day it is needed (Huge liberty taken with how long a month is, but as an accountant, you should be familiar with that)

Actually there are only 12 months the year in our company, but I have worked in 13 month companies. We do operate a 13th period for accountancy purposes, it is the one that goes after the end of one year and before the beginning of the next so that you can do all the accruals, corrections, tax write downs etc.

Too funny. I had an issue similar with an application a couple weeks ago. It was an old classic asp website that I rewrote and deployed to one of our new fancy-dancy servers which included a new corporate compliant internal url. The old classic app was decommissioned back in August of 2011. This user apparently just used an old link which happens and is no big deal. The funny part is that this is a technical call center and none of the people the person asked (he claims to have asked at least a dozen coworkers about this) noticed that he was simply using the wrong url.

                          I wasn't, now I am, then I won't be anymore.
