Can anyone provide me with any solid evidence that I need better protection on my computer than MSE? I've used Computer Associates Antivirus for years with no infections and no hassles. It automatically renews every year, charging me $50 for 3 computers. But it hasn't reported finding any problem in a couple of years, and I've been quite happy with MSE on the new machine since I built it and neglected to install the CA product. I've mentioned MSE here before, and it wasn't taken seriously by the community, but no hard facts were exchanged, either. Other than the perfectly normal distrust of all things Microsoft, is there any good reason to keep paying for antivirus software from a third party? Facts only, please... I'm trying to make a real decision here, not a political one.

Countered the univote: I didn't like AVG when we used at the first place I worked out of Uni. That said giving you a one vote for expressing an honest opinion isn't fair IMO.

A Dead ringer for Kate Winslett[^]Thank you. I agree that AVG may not be the best antivirus software out there but it is free and does its job. I haven't personally used any antivirus software in years! I work mostly on *nix systems and am very careful about my activities. I have been virus free for ~9 years and counting (even on windows systems)!! So my best recommendation for antivirus would be a combo of linux and paranoia. ;) Thank you for the counter vote.

I'm using MSE and had no problems so far. I even forgot about it (and to me that is a nice feature of an anti-virus software).

I always recommend the free version of AVG when asked about antivirus software. Might be worth a look if you have never tried it.
I used to use AVG too but then I started having problems with machine slowdown after one update (app, not virus sigs) so to verify it as the cause I uninstalled it and all became well again. I tried MSE and it didn't slow things down so I've stuck with it since. That was back in Feb 2009 and on XP and up till then it had been excellent.

Over the years I have tried most of the AV products: Symantec, McAfee, Kaspersky, even Panda. Then I moved to MSE. Of all the ones I have tried, it gives the least hassle, the least slow down, and I haven't had a problem yet - that I know about. It flags up a finding about once every two weeks, and it just works. As a MS user (and a hater of the cavalier way they treat their customers as a free test department, and rarely fix bugs in favour of adding features instead) that is praise indeed. It just works. End of.

I used AVG for years, but stopped using them because they started making me re-install the latest version every year. I cannot fault them for sending me to their web site and trying to make a buck, but it was just annoying to do that with multiple PCs. One of my IT guys is a rabid fan of Kaspersky's effectiveness. He has fought enough battles with viruses that I respect his opinion. I bought it (with 100% rebate), installed it on one machine, it seems fine. I have several machines using MSE. As far as I can tell it is good. It does not get in my way and it does not think it deserves to be the center of the universe (like McAfee and Symantec). I cannot speculate on which is most effective, I have never had real virus found. I can 2nd OriginalGriff's advice that MSE slows down the machine less than AVG. I When I switched from AVG to MSE on my gaming PC, I definitely noticed that. MS would know how to hook into Windows most efficiently, so it makes sense they are fast. Microsoft is a newcomer to anti-virus software, but then, viruses are always changing anyway, so maybe that does not mean much.

I use MSE and the free version of Malwarebytes... rarely do I ever have a problem that they cant cure. And I do have three teenage boys on my home pcs.....
Let's face it, after Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF! Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

I use MSE. No issues, but then I had no issues pre-MSE, either, so that could just be proper net hygiene. I will make one observation that I tell everyone about who stops to listen to my rants about machine performance as it relates to bloated AV software: I have MSE set to run a quick scan every night at 10PM. That's also smack dab in the middle of my Skyrim quality time these days. My game never shows so much as a hiccup in frame rate even when the scan is running. That's anecdotal of course, but I think it speaks quite a bit to the performance aspect.

I've been using MSE on all my computers at home and at work with great success. I do a periodic scan from some of the free scanners available from other vendors as a cross check and they've never found anything. I'm happy with MSE.

I've been using the free MSEE on all of my computers for several years without any problems. Before that I had McAfee and Norton, but as the subscriptions expired, I cancelled them and switched.

I will have to check MSE out then as I may just change my recommendation. I have not personally used AVG for sometime now but I used it on another persons laptop a couple or so years ago. I was impressed with it for removing viruses that other AV apps would not remove and since then I have recommended it. Thank you for the info. I will definitely have to give MSE a look now.
