I used to travel 16 miles to work, took about 90 minutes by car. Then for 6 wonderful years it took me less than 10 minutes to do 5 miles down country lanes. Now have to do 13 miles and takes about 40 minutes by car. It is crap, I find audio books are the best thing to listen to, something that can draw the mind in. Also helps to turn the mind off work so I get home able to relax rather than with stuff buzzing around.

depends on what city and if where you live now suits - if where you live is great and has everything you need/want, then that may be a price to pay - we in Sydney have people who commute for 1.5 hours each way - their trade-off is that they life on big semi-rural blocks out by the mountains or north/south in coastal towns - so for them, its worth it - really, no one can answer that question in entirety for you

I have a 5 minute drive to work. I can't imagine wasting an extra 2 hours a day. And how would I go home to play DDR over lunch when the drive is that long? I don't think I could do that.

I do 25km on country back roads. Takes 15-20mins. It's "busy" if I see 5 other cars. NZ-lack-of-population FTW!

15 mins there/30 mins back. Pretty good thought have to drive myself rather than use public transport (which, in London, is pretty good).

Mine is about the same but I travel by train. I'd take an hour long trip by train over a half hour drive. I can read a book, people watch and we don't have to keep and maintain a second car.

Currently (until I get a car) I have to travel 70 mins by train and walking between the stations, followed by a 30-40 minute bicycle ride. I've gotten used to it now but I can't wait to get an extra 2.5 hours of each day back when I get a car. At least the trains I get on are not crowded so there's space for my bike, and I have somewhere to eat some breakfast (I can never really eat when I first wake up).

Stop your bitching, I used to do 80km EACH way 5 days a week, 4 hours commute added to the working day. I would leave at 5am just to beat the traffic. You young wipper snappers get it too easy these days.

LUXURY, When i were a lad we had miles not new fangled kilometewotsits, and we didnt commute - no sir, we RAN on our bloodied stumps - it were so far we'd have to leave 2 hours before we went to bed. Get to work, do a days work in half the time before we had to turn around and crawl back home because we were that exhausted. You tell kids these days and they'll not believe you. Bryce

It takes me about 10 minutes to get to work. But that's because I have to put on some shorts and a T-shirt, then stop by the kitchen to make a pot of coffee and on my way from the bedroom to the office.

Israel is the size of New Jersey. It takes me between 40 to 90 minutes to work depends on traffic, accidents, weather etc etc. Audiobooks, podcasts, www.jango.com and good large coffee. Make you car your den :)

Hard to get used to a bad commute. If it were me and I felt the commute was excessive it would mean I'd only keep the job for six months tops. Or I'd plan on moving closer to work. Or work out a telecommute option. I mean; +2 hrs per day that you aren't getting paid for? I can see 1 hr (30 min each way) but 2? Lots of people are fine with that; but it's a personal thing and based entirely on the norm for the city you live in.

For me that would be too long, I'd have to move (or not take a job an hour away). The 'other side of town' here is about 15 minutes on a bike, though, so no worries for me ;)
