I'm taking the girlfriend to Paris in a few weeks time for her birthday and while I've got an idea of the main things I'd like to do and see, a bit of sage advice from the folks at CP is always welcome!! We're there for 4 nights, I've already got accommodation sorted (Quartier Latin on Blvd St-Germain) and I'm going to buy us Paris Visite travel cards for unlimited bus and train travel. Are there any 'hidden gems' you think I should and see or anything you think I need to avoid? It's also looking like I'm going to propose and while I've got a plan for a place and scenario, I'm open to clever ideas if anyone's got any? Thanks in advance

take a segway tour - day or night - http://citysegwaytours.com/paris[^] - if you've never been there before you get to cover a lot of ground - the Paris Visite train pass is functional, but over-priced, but the alternative is fiddlier unless you're there on the right day to obtain and recharge it etc There's a couple of 'off the track' walks that are quite good - there's one that starts in the Place de la Bastille and walks along a refurbished promenade to Square Charle Peguy thats quite nice [edit : found a link http://www.paris-walking-tours.com/promenadeplantee.html[^] /edit] 'g'

Sainte Chappell in the law courts is worth a visit (during daylight, the glass is spectacular) is a real hidden gem. The Cluniac museum (now called le musee de la moyen age) is worth a squizz. Not so hidden is the Cathedral of Saint Denis, much better architecturally than Notre Dame IMO. Pere Lachaise cemetery is also surprisingly good, but I'd suggest it for a longer trip. Le Institute de la Monde Arab has really good views from the top floor. Additionally the Paris Central Mosque has a really beautiful tea-room. Apologies to any French-Speakers. [edit] The arts & metiers museum is also worthwhile.

Paris o la la! :-D Sacré coeur, it pays the pain to go up the ladder, the views from outside are wonderful, the place around (montmartre is nice) and go inside and up to the main tower (good views). Notre Dame is nicer from it's back than from the front (IMHO) and it is nice to visit it. Do a cruise at the river (dinner cruise is nice). Eiffel tower, go up, if you have never seen it you will understand why it is so great once you are just down that monument. Louvre, it is a must, outside and inside... it is amazing truly (even if you don't understand nothing about art). Sainte chapel, a great place, glass by daylight... as someone else has pointed out is amazing. Visit the "quartier latin" at night (you can get good prices and a typical dish there). Go to Pigalle (where Moulin Rouge is). Please, book a >3 star hotel or get a hotel from a known brand... in Paris the more stars hotels have the more they pay to the town hall so you can guess that the stars there are something that is given really easily... be careful on that. PS: if you have time (one complete day at minimum) visit Versailles... Amazing place. PS2: and if you are tired of visiting the city you can always go to Disneyland Paris... (two days there are enough) I think they are in their birthday or similar and that they are giving good prices just now... Enjoy your trip! :thumbsup:

Les catacombes[^] and a cabaret[^] And if you have time, you really ought to go to Disneyland Paris[^], but that will take at least a whole day...

I agree with you Joan. Sacre Ceour is an absolute must. Best view of Paris from there, it is my favourite spot in the city. Just watch out for the hustlers... ;-) There are some very nice bistros and bars at the foot of the church hill... Good place to relax and enjoy Paris in the spring time.

Funnest thing to do is ride the Metro. Listen to the announcements as you go. They'll name every upcoming one except Tuileries...apparently because they don't know how to pronounce it, either. :laugh:

When's that ? I will be in Paris on march 15-18. Museums: If the weather is not so nice (everyone will rush to the museums), don't do the big museums (Louvre, Pompidou, Musée du quai Branly, Orsay), you will spend a lot of time in line waiting to get it. Try to go to smaller museums, especially the city museums (Free museums[^]). If you want to do them, do it in the morning, or later in the afternoon, so you can walk out for a drink before dinner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_museums_in_Paris[^] Churches: Notre-Dame, unless you want to wait in line, don't; Sacré-Coeur, ok, the neighbourhood is nice ( I like it) Monuments: Eiffel towers, if you want to go up, get your tickets in advance, but remember that if you want to go all the way to the top, I think the tickets cannot be bought in advance, and you will still wait in line. Arc-de-Triomphe, I never went up there... Cemeteries: Montparnass and "Le Pere Lachaise" are 2 very "nice" places to do some dead-people watching, the Pere Lachaise is fun, because there are places with really old tombs (get maps for both of them if you want to go to specific tombs). Parc: I love both the small Parc Monceau and the "Buttes Chaumont", and also the small "Parc de Belleville" where you can have a nice view of the city (it's on a hill) Generic Walking: I love the Belleville 'hood, as well as the area around rue Lecourbe and Vaugirard (my parents lived in that area for couple of years). Places to skip:(IMO) The area between "Centre Pompidou" and "Les Halles", mostly tourist traps (very bad food $$$$) , same thing for "Ile de la Cité" (the other smaller island, "ile st-louis" is better. Shopping ( personally, I don't shop in Paris) Skip everything on "Les Champs Élysées" (tourist traps + $$$$ ) "Au Bon Marché" is nice, as well as the "Galleries Lafayettes", both are department stores. For smaller shops, walk around the "Le Marais" or around where you will be staying. For window licking (leche-vitrines), just walk on the boulevard st-honorée and the jewel stores at the place vendôme. Food/Drinks: General rules, stay away from tourist area, you get hungry, just walk awa
