Class for Kids
-
I was thinking about starting a class at my house for kids. The class would teach kids how to program and kind of be an alternative to Karate class. I found that it was hard to get started programming when I was a kid and would have loved to had something like this when I was a kid. Just wanted to get other peoples opinion on this. Would you send your kids to a class like this? Was going to charge for it but was planning on it be a small fee so I can pay for the computers needed for the class. Probably charge around $20 or $30 dollars a month. Would you pay that for your kid to take the class?

In high school my friend's father actually did something similar, he held a class after school to teach C++ because our computer options were...well they were terrible (VB.Net and HTML were the best they offered...). It was fairly popular but I don't remember if he charged for it or not.

If I had kids, I would teach them myself.

I don't know what the situation in the US would be, but in the UK I would expect you to have to have a Criminal Record Bureau check (with supporting documents) before you would be allowed in close proximity to kids (or any other vulnerable people): I did for some voluntary work a few years back. In the UK these take up to three months to come through, and cost the equivalent of $50~60 US, renewable every two or three years. Would I pay that for a kid to take computer classes? Um, no. But then I am in the industry and probably have as much experience as you do! Hang on a moment, so are most of the other people here!

Hang on a moment, so are most of the other people here! :doh:I'll reply to this one, but it goes for AspDotNet's post as well. It's not the same thing, knowing how to program and teaching. I have decent teaching abilities. I teach people assorted things now, and was a teachers assistant in college. Teaching your own kids is not the same. We home school my daughter, and that goes fine, but I still can't teach her programming. I do teach her a lot of things, but some things your kids just don't learn well from you. Be it that they just try to hard, you can't seem to get them interested, etc... Whatever the reason, sometimes it's nice to have an "outsider" help with some subjects. Just cause you know it does not mean you can teach it, especially when it comes to your own children.
If it moves, compile it

Both my boys want to be scientist, I could learn them how to program but I has technology changes we envisige fewer and fewer real programming jobs.

Oh, I would agree - I've met some very skilled people who couldn't teach their way out of an open paper bag. But I've also seen what passes for teaching in computing generally, and I'm not impressed at all!

If your imaginary kids turn out like my kids, the moment you start talking to them all they hear is "This is a blah-blah-blah" followed by a complete brain shutdown. I can teach other's, but my own....forget it. Those who succesfully teach their own kids..kudo's - you are clearly and demonstably way better than I am if you can hold their interest for more than milliseconds. They have to be naturally interested (and not just their parents interested in them learning) and have a bit of self motivation for your concept to to be succesful.

I'd want my kids experiencing life, not stuck for long lengths of time programming. Let's face it in years to come they'll be fewer and fewer *programming* jobs.

Metro RSSProbably true, but the pay will be higher because only the best will be accepted. Already seeing where good programmers are working and average are not, and there is a demand.

It's an interesting idea - but as a parent and teacher, I don't see it being successful unless.. What you are teaching is relevant to the school curriculum (so parents will send their thick kids in the hope they can catch up) They are learning to program stuff that really interests them, so they will beg their parents to let them go; in my experience you will have a very small number of school kids, but maybe a larger number of young adults.. My kid begs me to do gymnastics - because he wants to learn to be a freerunner. In the same way I can imagine other kids might beg their parents to let them go to Uncle Gate's computer class because they want to write the next bog iPhone game or something. I can't imagine them begging to learn the latest Linq techniques :) If you were to go ahead, I would suggest trying to do it in conjunction with either local school or college - many (over here, anyway) run evening classes in everything from nude painting (too cold) to recreational panel beating - and they will likely have computer labs you can use. (and they will also probably set the price and handle the financials, background checks etc.) If you spread your net wide enough, then you could probably make a go of it, but it's have to be pretty exciting, I think, to tear the kids away from the skatepark/PS3/Xbox/behind the bikeshed/pub (depending on their age)

How long are the classes, how often. Sounds like $20-30 a month for horror baby sitting is a great deal to me. Of course I'd send the little buggers along, learning would be a optional bonus.
