I'm tired of having to give my contact information (or someone's contact information) whenever I want to read a whitepaper. It's bad enough that most of these are just brochures. In spite of that useful information can be gleaned from these from time to time. But it takes so much time to always have to fill out online forms just to glance at these and see if you want to read further that for me it is now too onerous to bother with anymore. To reference Vonnegut; they can just take a FF at a rolling doughnut.

I believe you mean an "airborne elephant" in the current context. I, too, am annoyed by having to register or otherwise delay my search for information this way, but most times I find a lot of useful info in White Papers, and suffer the garbage in exchange. When the inevitable flood of unwanted advertising follows, it's easy enough to inform Outlook that it's spam. The companies that offer such papers spent some dough creating them, so they're entitled to collect something for the price of entry if they want.

Random?... Sounds like there is a market for my enemies list.

Might not have to be random. I often use the alias "Fred Ziffel" when going to such sites. And Fred has a forward in my domain for email. Anyone wants to spam Fred, they get sent to the fabulous bit bucket in the cloud. Mr. Ziffel cannot take your call or read your email.

When did elephant start meaning that? I've noticed the use of it recently on CP but I hadn't seen that usage before.

My philosophy is a little different. They want, in the long run, to sell me a product. They want to spend dough making things 'on spec' that's not my concern. If they want me to read their paper and maybe someday be a customer then they should reduce the barriers between me and their product. If they don't want to reduce the barriers so they can get targeted sales, then they will never have me as a customer through this channel.
