aaargh! virus effects and a dvdrom drive that works but not in windows...

I need to burn some files to one empty DVD before formatting the computer. The windows 7 computer (after getting infected by who knows which kind of virus) is not seeing the DVD rom drive. I've thought using the UBUNTU live cd that I had from a test I did several time ago, launch "brasero" (that it seems to be a cd / dvd burning software) and burn the DVD. It seems not to be possible as the CDROM can't be removed from the drive... so now I'm in a dead end... Any idea? Thank you in advance!

Do you mean you can't physically remove a cd from the drive? If you take a paper clip, unfold it and pop the end in the hole you'll find on the fron of the DVD drive and give a slight tug it will open.

There's a tiny pinhole in the front of the drive. Bend a small paper clip straight, insert it straight into the hole and press gently. This releases the internal lock on the drive, and the door springs open. Another option, once you get the door open - boot from a Windows installation CD, get to the repair console prompt, and run fixmbr. That might (temporarily) repair some of the key damage done by the virus.

Can your computer boot from a USB memory stick? If so, get ubuntu on a usb stick and boot from there. Then burn your DVD.

If you cannot do as ahmed zahmed said and boot Linux from a USB here are a couple more options. 1) Rather that booting from the USB use it to copy the file onto ( could also use a USB HDD, etc. ) . 2) Using a live Linux that offers the options to load it into memory ( try Slax ) that will free up your DVD drive to use for burning. 3) Temporarily install a second drive for burning.

I uninstalled a (crappy) game once, only to find they'd thoughtfully uninstalled my dvd drivers as well. I was able to fix the problem by doing a system restore. I'll admit to installing/uninstallling the game twice more, simply to see if it was a one-off. It wasn't - lost the driver each and every time.. Perhaps they were just trying help me with my descision to not have it installed - something along the lines of "Just in case you change your mind.."
