Rant Mode: ON Here are some internet SINS that should be sufficient cause to send certain developers straight to HELL. 1: If you run a news site that requires a person to sign into Facebook in order to comment on the news item then you can go to HELL. I don't have a Facebook account and I'm never going to have one - despite your best attempts to force me into having one. Facebook is just a bunch of bored people picking through each other's garbage and it sucks. 2: If you put a video up on a news site the video had best not start out with a 30 second ad (or any ad) or you can go straight to HELL. I no longer watch NBC videos, and ignore NBC content of any sort because they lace it all with ads. MSN sucks for the same reason. They'll post 10 great videos but you spend most of your time watching ads. Hello, that's why I quit watching TV. There was a point in time when the internet was about convenience and information and now it's all ads. I HATE people who keep pushing their stuff in my face and they deserve eternal punishmnet for it. I'm actually getting to the point where I use the internet less and less because marketing is chewing up 90% of my bandwidth with stuff I don't want or need. Leave it to these guys to stomp out the internets. Rant Mode: OFF

I agree, but may I remind you that nothing ever is free, especially not in the internet. Whatever 'free' services you use, they are being paid for with advertising, which again is paid for with every product you buy. It's like a secret internet tax.

I agree with you. I've created dummy facebook and goggle accounts so I can comment. As for the ads... I don't think it's that bad, yet. But, it is getting worse.

Would you be happier paying to use an ad-free Google, GMail, Yahoo Finance and YouTube?  If so, I humbly suggest that you would be a member of a small minority.  Small enough to make these services not viable. A modified hosts file spares me the angst of unwanted ads and I log out of Facebook when I'm done using it (which is about 10 minutes a day).  I log into Google only about once a month for a few minutes to monitor my AdSense account - other than that, I couldn't care less if Google knows that my IP address searched for "bacon". :) /ravi

That is my biggest peeve. I understand the ads and whatnot. annoying as they may be, fine people are going to make money. BUT, I am not a high school dropout, or a moron(at least I don't think so) and I DO like to read. If it is a video that shows something relevant to the story itself(as in shots of the perpetrator etc..) then fine I might watch it. But I HATE watching a video that is nothing but some twat telling me the story when I could read it in 1/10 of the time. And in fact when I hit those I usually just close the page.

It used to be what you know that got you ahead, then it was who you know, now its what you know about who you know that gets you ahead. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Item 1, alone, is worthy of the +5 I've already ranted, myself, about sites that insist I download various frameworks (e.g., Silverlight) and latest version (Adobe ver 2304.2.1) in order to view their stuff. This is especially true if I'm shopping, where-upon I pick up my mouse and shop elsewhere. And don't forget the sweethearts who bestow their tracking cookies as flash-cookies!

I now have a facebook account. My niece post pictures of my great nephews that I want to see so I had to get an account. Minimal content on it but I can now see the pictures and download for my mother. Mom does okay on the computer but she does not want to get into facebook or the internet for that matter. E-mail is the extent of her using the internet. As to your rant. I agree. Having DSL the so-and-sos that have video or music start automatically should be added.

You've just illustrated an important point. Signing into FACEBOOK isn't providing the comments section with more 'security'. People just use ghost accounts.

*My response after this short ad* Have you looked at the new Jeeps lately? They've got a new Penstar engine and they've reworked the interiors to be quieter and much more cozy. If you've not looked at the new Jeep lately you should run on over to www.jeep.com and schedule a test drive. ***** I know, and all the advertising is driving me nuts. ***** You sound like a man who has a hard time pleasing his woman. If that's the case, have you talked to your doctor about Erectile Dysfunction? There are many treatments on the market today. Make sure to ask your doctor today about some of the exciting developments today - ask your doctor about Viagra!

I agree, but may I remind you that nothing ever is free, especially not in the internet. Whatever 'free' services you use, they are being paid for with advertising, which again is paid for with every product you buy. It's like a secret internet tax.

:) /ravi

I don't use Google products. I do have a Hotmail account, but I pay $20.00 a year to NOT see ads.

All of you could share a Dropbox account. You could share lots of photos without exposing them to everyone else.

I'm like you I don't hardly watch TV since they lengthened the commercial time to 30%. Used to be if a show you wanted to watch was coming on you did what you needed to do then sit down and watch the whole thing with little interruption now I'm of the age where when a commercial comes on I get up and do other things and by the time it comes back on I forgot what I was watching.

And text is honestly more convenient. I like to skim news when I'm bored, and it's generally at places where I either don't have speakers, or the ambient noise level is too high to hear my speakers without sticking my ear to the speaker (it's a netbook, not exactly the best speakers). Sure, I do lug around some a massive pair of headphones but it's not worth digging them out to watch one video they should have just given me a text version of in the first place.
