Registry cleaners
-
Does anyone have any recommendation for good registry cleaners? (Free ones would be most appreciated, although I wouldn't mind paying if the thing has good reputation.) I've got a 2-year-old home PC that's nearly grinding to a halt. Can't say for certain it's the registry, but it's worth a try. Cheers.
Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...

My understanding is that registry cleaners are about as much value for money as those injector cleaners you put in your petrol tank.

the only reg cleaner i truely trust is the windows installer... yes that is right i re-install :sigh:
Argh... You're probably right... but I probably should have mentioned I'd rather not reinstall Windows.

I don't really trust those things at all... It's best to troubleshoot to find out what's causing the problem.

Point taken... I should probably sit down and work out what useless programs the thing is running. The PC in question belongs to my other half, and it's still booting up while I'm happily checking emails and reading the news on the web on my Mac when we start up at the same time. Just looking for a quicker way out of this problem...

As others already mentioned, registry cleaners are not really reliable. I would still second Ccleaner. I have it now for like 1 year now and I use it often to clean up temporary files etc and registry as well. It has been working fine for me thus far. As far as system getting slow is concerned, is there any suspicious process or service eating up the resources?

It's either something scary-looking was eating up the resources (i.e. don't know if it's safe to turn that off) or there isn't a single offending process. I have to admit I've not looked at it properly lately.

First step should be to run msconfig.exe and see what cr@p is loading at startup that you don't need, don't want, or even, in some cases, don't even know what it is. Better still, go http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals[^] and download autoruns (or run it directly from the site). There are a few other tools there as well, that may prove useful.

best tool ever! I like that one and have it on nearly all machines.

I too recommend CCleaner. It is very useful tool.

Try sysinternals tools to see what is specifically eating up resources. Task manager sucks at the task.

After you've done the usual spyware, virus checks. You might go ahead and do a dump on the registry as a backup before you run your reg cleaner. It just goes out as a text file. The suggestion about MSConfig is great. I'd unplug from the internet and turn everything off in there that I could and turn them on selectively. Do NOT forget to defrag the page file. That is usually missed in the laundry list of things to go after but it gets fragmented just like anything else on a disk. Best way to defrag it is to move it to another drive. Second best way (that I know) is to blow it away and then do defrag on the whole drive. Then rebuild it. Or you could use this little utility from MS. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426[^] Old machines get fragmented page files but nothing defrags them natively. One of the things you get from a fresh re-install is this would get rebuild. But if this is one of your primary problems you might just run this first and see if you don't have to go through the (potential) agony of a rebuild. It runs the defrag on the reboot, btw. I keep page file on a separate drive (or partition) and have set up servers this way as well. Makes for a rock-solid system in a lot of cases.
