Portal ending
-
My son finished Portal (original on Orange box) last night. For those that haven't finished it before, there is this really cute song sung by the computer at the end. It's so awesome and unexpected, I went to bed with a big smile on my face :D Does that sound weird?

Not really, there is quite a following, do a Google search for "Still Alive" or even on you tube and you'll find plenty of information on the song. And there are bands actually covering the song. My Duaghter absolutly loves the song. Portal 2 has some new songs. The soundtrack can be downloaded at the "Official" Portal 2 website.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

My son downloaded a little Android app GLaDOS soundboard for his phone with a load of the phrases from the game. It's a good laugh. He wants to get Portal 2 on the weekend.

He will like it, my daughter did. I liked it too. The Wheatley character is a hoot. Has a lot of great lines such as "So there's a slight chance that you have a minor case of serious brain damage"

Actually the best part of the game for my son is the slightly weird humour. The comments and only very slightly veiled deceit by the computer is actually the most enduring feature even after the great innovation of the game mechanic itself. When you get to the end, you're kinda left with a feeling that the whole thing is a thoroughly polished and well thought-out affair.

Not weird at all! After I beat the game, my kids fell in love with that song and were singing it for weeks afterwards. :)

Jonathan Coulton (may his name be glorified on high) wrote it. There's a version with Sara Quinn (of Tegan & Sara) singing it on his last album, Artificial Heart. Yes, I like the song (see my sig) :)
Look at me still talking when there's science to do When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you

One of the reasons why games are largely so derivative these days is that no-one is willing to do something different, no-one wants to take a risk. I find that a little sad really. In this case, someone took a risk and suddenly we get a game that can properly be called "iconic". Someone should really beat the guys in charge of EA et al and shout at them with a loud voice "It's OK to take a risk: we won't crucify you if you make the occasional blunder as long as you make some really great things as well." Well done to Valve for having the faith to give those guys a chance. On another related topic, when are we going to get the next episode of Half Life 2, for crying out loud?

I like to sit and listen to the hilarious things GLaDOS says. I never finish the 'tests' in a reasonable amount of time because I'm sitting there laughing at the computer. Remember the Portal trailer? "If at first you don't succeed, you fail."

In Portal 2 Wheatley and GlaDOS get irritated with Chell when you don't respond to them. It is half the fun the comments they make.
