Pay Per Install?
-
I'm thinking of changing my software distribution method from "try and buy" to "freeware", and including a third-party pay per install (PPI) component bundled in the setup program. You know, one of those things where you can opt out of installing Bing or Google toolbar or whatever. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with using PPI? And if so, any thoughts as to if it was worth it and what companies and or services are recommended or should be avoided? The whole shareware "try and buy" isn't really working that well anymore for me, so not sure what else I would try. Thanks for any feedback.

I don't have experience of PPI however I do have some experience of trying to sell my own software and can confirm that it is indeed difficult to get people to pay for software. The only real money I have made if through google advertising clicks and that is just about enough to buy my beer. I put it down to marketing - I am a developer and am more interested in developing applications than all the energy required in marketing a product. If you find a way to market your software then I think your current model should work...

As a consumer, I don't mind the opt-in for various toolbars etc. but it irritates my pants off (ladies take note) when sneaky methods are used to try to get you to install a toolbar - like hiding the checkbox off the bottom of the form, or amongst masses of other text . Depending on the software the current model in favor seems to be the purchase of add ones - usually with games (buy a jet lack for 99c) but I don't see why this wouldn't work for other software too. Ike if ms word came without a thesaurus - but you could buy one for a coule of bucks.
