SAN JOSE, California: As hundreds of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)[^]alumni gather here in Silicon Valley this weekend to mark the golden jubilee of their celebrated school, they have just heard of a fancy new equation being bandied around in the US: IIT=Harvard+MIT+Princeton. ... ... "The United States imports oil from Saudi Arabia, cars from Japan, TVs from Korea and whiskey from Scotland. So what do we import from India? We import people, really smart people," co-host Leslie Stahl began while introducing the segment on IIT. Report: Source from India[^] CBS 60 Minutes Source[^] Kant Sonork-100.28114 Don't  and Drive.

The only things that sets the IITs apart is their extremely tough entrance test. Naturally the students are the cream of the crop drawn from all over India, who have prepared for months with the specific purpose of aceing this exam. The IIT system just collects this cream and exports them abroad. By their fourth (senior) year in their program, most IITans are scrambling to get into a US university and subsequently immigrate to the US. - Vivek

Hello, the CPians around the world.;) Why do the programmer in India or China come to USA? 1) Cheaper labor cost in India or China than in USA. X| (American company can hire the programmer with less salary than one in USA.) 2) The programmer in Inida can speak English, but not Chinese. 3) The programmer from India in USA has some groups to exchange the info of job market in USA.:omg: To be sure, the programmer of India seems to be good, but at the world level of the job market, many good programmer must exist at the other countries. But, they may not need to come to USA since they get good salary. Please, don't send me your email about your programming questions directly. However, if you believe that you gives me some benefits, you can send me your email. Have a nice day! Sonork - 100.10571:vcdeveloper ;)

Kant wrote: How many US folks can pass that exam? Plenty. Contrary to what people may think, these exams are neither conducted randomly nor are the winners born geniuses. The students who clear these exams sometimes undergo two years of intensive coaching and countless hours solving previous exam papers. I have heard that the coaching costs *MORE* than the entire tuition they pay at the IITs. Kant wrote: That would happen only when for 1 Indian Rupee you get $50 dollars That is besides the point. If IITs were better than Harvard+MIT+Princeton why is no one lining up to further their academic (not financial) goals at these institutions. Forget about other countries, why are *IITians* themselves not enrolling there for further studies. I have nothing against IITs. I do think their alumni have succeeded in the American workplace. IITans have proven beyond doubt that they can be good (and sometimes exceptional) workers, they have also proven to be successful entrepreneurs who have made it big (along with thousands of non-IITans) in an environment like Silicon Valley. That is the extent of their achievements, lets stop at that. Comparisons with Harvard/MIT/Princeton are nonsensical. Kant wrote: What's wrong in choosing the better life. Nothing. :-) - V

As a former visiting faculty of IIT Kanpur I'd like to congratulate all IIT alumni with the jubilee. I spent two unforgettable years in this institute. All the best to all of you! As for your “equation”: modesty decorates… Best wishes. Igor Ladnik
