Judicious shopping is the answer. As an experiment a few weeks ago, and by checking offers and deals on line first, I went to Sainsburys and Tesco with a list of what to get for a week's meals. 28 meals (7 days x 2 meals per day x 2 people) came to £36. Ok, some of the 'Meals' were tins of soup (5 tins of Heinz soup for £2) but for a lunch at work it is fine. All the veg was fresh, and apart from a pack of bacon and sausages, all the meat was fresh too. I made Lasagne, Roast Chicken, Pork Steaks etc, so it was proper food and healthy too, and at £1.30 a meal all in it was fairly cheap. I previously was spending over £100 a week in Sainsburys and realised how much crap we bought that wasn't used or needed, and have resolved to halve my bill. So far I haven't gone above £50 per week. It is amazing what you can do with a little foresight and preparation. (PS, NEVER go shopping when you are hungry).

I went out at lunchtime to get some (Shell) and there was a queue down the road to get in, and no diesel when I got there (not that I drink the stuff). No pasties in the shop though.

In a few week garages will be accepting 3 pasties and a book of first class stamps for a gallon of petrol.

Prices are much lower, but you do need to wash the dirt of the food! :laugh: Last weeks fruit and veg shop was around £10 and I got more than I would at the supermarket for a lot less then we'd normally pay.

Odd that we notice the 1p and 2p increases in petrol, yet make no comment on the fact that eggs have more than doubled in price in a year, meat has risen 30% and fresh fruit and veg is going to peak at about 60% more than a year ago. I would be more concerned at the cost of food than petrol.

Cause and effect. I worry about the cause first. Once the cause happens then I worry about the effect.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

I had to go out a little earlier to go to tesco for salad bits for tonight. I had forgotten they have a petrol station, and the only way into the store car park goes past it... There was no queue. There was fuel. If I hadn't filled up on Monday, I could have done so, easily. I did notice that the price had gone up 2p a litre since yesterday though...:mad:

I have seen the prices to change around 10 €-Cent inside the same day. Morning: 1.65 €/l, Afternoon = 1.55 €/l (and that almost a week)

Fuel here has gone up about $1.00 in the past month, but there's no shortage. Of course, in 1973, when the government and scientists around the world said we'd be out of petroleum in 20 years, and gas went from $0.27 to $0.70 a gallon overnight, they suddenly found more. It's been almost 40 years since then, 20 years beyond the cutoff date, and we use more every day than ever before. Funny how there's always plenty of it if we're willing to pay more... Inflation I understand, but back then, working as a minimum wage pizza cook, it took two hours to earn enough to fill the tank. Today, in the same job, it would take ten hours of work to fill the same tank.That's the only true measure of value - how many hours of life you have to give up for the items you want to purchase.

It doesn't go bad for years - so a case or two (12x28oz/case) will always get me through to the next big sale: how much purchased dependent upon eating habits and current stash. The strategy works well with quite a number of commodities, and is mainly limited by your storage space. Fuel is saved, as well, by shopping the Ads (adverts to some of you) an then hitting the several markets as I pass them. The resultant savings are considerable, but they are time averaged. The results do, however, show after laying in the initial supplies as they need not be purchased for many a trip. Works for me.
