Hi all, We recently had a debate at work about which IT job is the most specialized... that one position where you are so highly specialized, it will take years for somebody to follow in your footsteps. Which IT job/specialization do you think is THE most specialized? :)

Acoording to my understanding, those who are woking on building the kernal of the operating systems, who deal with complex algorithms, implement functionality in Assembly, C, and C++ language are the most specialized from technical and domain front.

Mine. No-one here understands what I do, which means I can bluff to anyone but does mean if I have so much as a lunchbreak and something looks like going wrong they all panic and queue up waiting for me to return.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

It's not exactly specialized but people found it hard to say exactly what my ex-wife did. She sold sea shells on the sea shore.

You said "IT" rather than "computer science" so that leaves out a whole bunch of specialized fields like crypto and such. In IT I suspect that even the "most" specialized isn't that specialized. As a database and backend guy I think I'm fairly specialized, but certainly not irreplacable.

From my experience with finding people to fit on the team, I'd say embedded software.

Hi all, We recently had a debate at work about which IT job is the most specialized... that one position where you are so highly specialized, it will take years for somebody to follow in your footsteps. Which IT job/specialization do you think is THE most specialized? :)

Safety-critical, mission-critical software. Pure and simple. Software in which if there is a single 'bug', it may directly cause the deaths of one or more humans. The absolute pinnacle. And we utterly shun "C" & "C++" with very, very good reason.
