Cream of the Crop IT Job

Hi all, We recently had a debate at work about which IT job is the most specialized... that one position where you are so highly specialized, it will take years for somebody to follow in your footsteps. Which IT job/specialization do you think is THE most specialized? :)
Technical writer. I've yet to see one that was worth a damn.

You said "IT" rather than "computer science" so that leaves out a whole bunch of specialized fields like crypto and such. In IT I suspect that even the "most" specialized isn't that specialized. As a database and backend guy I think I'm fairly specialized, but certainly not irreplacable.

Safety-critical, mission-critical software. Pure and simple. Software in which if there is a single 'bug', it may directly cause the deaths of one or more humans. The absolute pinnacle. And we utterly shun "C" & "C++" with very, very good reason.

Acoording to my understanding, those who are woking on building the kernal of the operating systems, who deal with complex algorithms, implement functionality in Assembly, C, and C++ language are the most specialized from technical and domain front.
Vijay, the area you noted, "woking on building the kernal of the operating systems," is software engineering-related, not "IT" related. IT jobs use those types of products, not create them. None-the-less- the most complex IT job is the SCE, or Specialty Coffee Engineer. Their job is a 24/7/365 demand that has literally no end in sight .... ;P

The most complex IT job is the SCE, or Specialty Coffee Engineer*. Especially steaming up the cream, cuz we'd use the crop of the organic raw milk! This job is a 24/7/365 demand that has literally no end in sight ... ;P * I actually convinced my manager to let me bring my little brother on at Apple to do just that for almost 2 months; though, on the books he was a "contract software test associate". His excellent coffees allowed him to get away with crappy testing results! (He did become a solid tester ... eventually.)

I would say writing software for the space shuttle is the most specialised IT job. For me programming any sort of hard real time system where the choice of int over long can spell the difference between life and death, is an extremely specialised IT job.

The cream of the crop IT Job is the one where you are so involved technically in more that one area of technology. That way everyday is a new challenge. You get to be known as the person who has a complete understanding of systems from end to end.

Yes, I would say that we're all fairly easily replaceable at this point due to how many jobs have been loss (and continue to be). Even after all the shoes I filled over the years in IT (network admin, server admin, monitor carrier (glad they're lighter now), database admin, web developer, and now in incident management for one of the largest operations centers there are (think of one of the biggest names in online email not being gmail or yahoo). I can tell you that I'm still pretty easily replaceable. Even looking around me at some of the more .. professional professionals .. I can say that even with all their amazing skill sets, they're still replaceable within a short time frame. I think the days of being anything otherwise are over. Must have been cool to be IT in the 80s. More respectable perhaps?
