This is pathetic. Just because the guy was a weapons inspector his "chatting up who he thought was a 14 year old" offence is brought up. Tons of other guys out there with the same charge, why don't I read about them alongside this chap? Sad media, sad readers. Anyway

But it turns out police caught Ritter months before, but declined to press charges. Sources tell us Ritter tried to meet a 14 year-old girl he chatted with online. He was instead met by police officers, who let him go. Ritter was arrested in June of 2001 for allegedly trying to lure a 16 year-old girl he met online to a Burger King. But that girl was really an undercover cop- surfing the web as part of a police sting operation. Ritter was charged with attempted endangerment of a child. But the charge was dismissed and the case sealed. That means, essentially, that it never happened. Ritter searched Iraq for weapons in the years following the Gulf War. More recently, he's been speaking out against President Bush's policies on Iraq and is frequently seen on local and national television. It does have stuff to do with his credibility. If he shows poor judgment in his private life, then what about his public life. But like anything, it must be viewed in perspective. I haven't really heard anybody make a big deal out if it. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

I have to agree that Scott Ritter has not been terribly objective lately. (Case in point: I read an interview with him where the interviewer mentioned the children's prison in Iraq where Saddam kept the families of political opponents. He said he wouldn't talk about it because he was campaigning for peace.) Maybe it's my background in science, but I wince a little bit when people give or omit facts to skew people towards their own viewpoint. Nevertheless, I think the whole debate doesn't depend on what Ritter says anymore than a court case depends on what the defending attorney says or doesn't say. It's up to the prosecuting attorney to bring out the facts that the defending atorney doesn't. In this analogy, it's up to the Bush administration to point out the holes or problems with Ritter's assessment, rather than expect an objective opinion. I've also noticed that you have to parse Scott Ritter's statements a bit, because he's choosing his words carefully. Credibility also suffers because criminals are viewed as untrustworthy. You hide your daughters from this type of man. Why should one give their trust to him? Perverts are also viewed as being secretive, having something to hide. That inability to be open and frank casts doubt on everything within his character.
