Brian Dunn, CEO of Best Buy Quits

Wow, I just watched a documentary where he insisted that people want to buy in the store and not online.

I like buying some stuff from a store, like fresh produce ;p

I'm always amazed when a company is in trouble, and the CEO 'quits', and walks away with millions upon millions.

Considering that BB is now at $21 and will likely be tanking faster than the Titanic, his options compensation isn't worth the paper it's printed on. :)

Ya, but the problem is that the CEO will get paid first, before stockholder and other interests.

His options are now all out of the money. The prospects of them ever becoming in the money are, well zero. He won't be paid anything except is million dollar salary. The other nine million has vaporised. :)

In South Africa, best you can expect is 6-10 business days delivery... When I order from Honk Kong, I can expect delivery in 8-12 business days, pay less for shipping, and hellavo lot less for the product. Now how does that make sense?

Crap. I wish I knew. I have a brand-new (sealed) Mikasa set for 4 that I've been dying to unload. Really. /ravi

The postage from Toronto would be a killer. And who ships crockery? Oh, Mikasa does! /ravi

I've gotten some very good deals from my local Best Buy. However, this past weekend, I took my son there so he could try out different laptops to see which he preferred. The laptops were mostly the worse of each brand. When we told the (rather nice) sales guy that it had to be able to play games, he said this was a common request and agreed that the selection for that sucked. Why then don't they stock the items people actually want, instead of dozens of items they don't? (Yeah, I know, they stock high margin items and try to sucker people into buying them.) I did notice that they finally priced their UPSs, Mice and keyboards competitively. (And considering the mess Best Buy made of last Christmas, Dunn should have been immediately fired by the board of directors.) PS. We ended up buying an ASUS from Amazon.

It really seems that electronics stores are quickly becoming a thing of the past. They don't sell anything that's really necessary to have "right now", so people are willing to pay cheaper places online and wait for items to ship. They can't compete with the customizability of computers ordered online (whether pre-built or custom built). Most music sales have moved to the internet (I still prefer CDs though, but people like me are becoming a minority), along with a good portion of videos.

Join the club. I still buy CDs and vinyl. Oddly, for vinyl, the 'best' stuff is not even available online anymore. You have to go to record shows or dig through boxes and boxes in antique stores. :)

The problem with online is that the quality of some items can't be readily determined. When I bought my HDTV, I'd settled on a specific model, but when I saw it in the store, I didn't like it at all. Ironically, it was Best Buy and they had some non-LED backlit Samsungs on clearance for ridiculously low prices. I couldn't tell the difference between the LED and non-LED backlit models and don't care about 3D and saved close to $300 over my original plans.

On the other hand though, many online retailers have reviews and ratings posted from customers which helps when researching a product, and it tells you some things a floor model can't like "Will this still work a year form now?". Physical shopping does have it's advantages, but overall online shopping seems to be winning out (I've even seen delivery trucks for local grocery stores which apparently also have online ordering now...though I can't see myself ordering things like fruits, vegetables, and meat without inspecting them first).

I don't get how these CEO's can get bonuses for failure?

Makes me feel grateful for being in the UK, where next day delivery is available from most online stores - I've become so used to it that I take it for granted.
