What music do you listen to when you are coding? Or, do you not listen to any at all? I like trance, something that has a consistent beat but usually no words. The constant beat seems to keep my mind focused.

J.S. Bach Precise, with lots of creativity - just what I need when coding. Mainly orchestral suites or the lute suites on guitar...

Planet Rock. Even the doorbell goes up to 11.

Maybe it's just me, but it constantly surprises me that people seem to have such narrow tastes in music. I like music. I listen to almost anything - some I like, some I don't. if I don't like it I hit skip, change radio stations or whatever. When I am head-down bum-up coding in an office environment (i.e. with noise) I tend to go for something without lyrics just to keep out distractions. But when I am coding alone at home, anything goes.

I'm glad I don't have to code in your office.

Well that's a generous offer, won't it interfere with your typing?

I prefer silence or birds singing or wind... but most of the time I am surrounded with distractions and I MUST turn on sound wall as a defensive measure. Usually it's loud, aggressive and/or rhythmic (Slayer, Tool, Die Antwoord, Sepultura, Prodigy, Chemical brothers, Rage against the machine and so on). When I need to concentrate and time is of essence I prefer Tool, I drum with my feet and get sucked into the code. On the other hand when I am not in the hurry I'll listen to something neutral and calming like Dido, Portishead, Alice in chains...
