Creating Icons
-
So I'm working on a project and I need to create icons for various tasks within the project. I'm having a bit of a creative block and can't figure out what to do for each of them (going to end up with 10 or so). In the end, I'm certain that each icon will be examined by a committee and redesigned to what they want. If I try to present them with a button that has some text on it, that won't fly. Anyone have any strategies for figuring out how to make match an image to the text you want to convey? A few I have ideas about, but others I am just lost. "Contact Us" for example... total shutdown of the brain. Maybe a good bit of drink or three would help the creative juices.:beer::beer:
Free icons. Inkscape is nifty for creating icons (I've created a couple myself).

A phone (the old kind)? A rotary dialer? A number pad? The pound symbol? A pen writing on a pad of paper? A loudspeaker with arcs to represent sound waves? An area code (e.g., "(555)")?

"Contact us": http://stockfresh.com/image/310181/contact-us-icon[^] (royalty free, about $1US each icon, going up to $10US for bigger ones) If you can design 'em for that kind of money, you're a much better man than I! (I will say at this point that I haven't used them, but I am very tempted...)

Go to Google Images, type in what you want and click the search button. Works for me.

I really hate the restrictions those places put on the use of the images. Here are a few of the more silly restrictions (I paraphrased some of them for brevity) from that site in particular for the standard license (the extended license is 100 credits):
- On mass produced, "print on demand" items such as t-shirts [...]
- For pornographic, unlawful or other immoral purposes, for spreading hate or discrimination, or to defame or victimize other people, societies, cultures.
- In tobacco / pharmaceutical ads and political endorsements.
- In a way that would make people assume that the person(s) depicted on the Image is/are endorsing a certain product or a service.
- In a way that could give a bad name to either Stockfresh or the person(s) depicted on the Image, including illustrating sensitive social issues such as health, crime, sexual preferences, drug abuse or similar issues.
- As part of a business name, trademark, service mark or logo.
- On a website at a resolution greater than 800 x 600 pixels.
Can't use them on shady sites (e.g., a pro-life or pro-choice website), can't use them at too great a resolution, can't use them on products you sell a lot of, can't use it as part of your company's logo... far too restrictive for me to consider using on any of my personal work.

Thanks for the advice. I found an image that helps me understand you. http://www.kindertrauma.com/?p=26816[^]

Have you posted this in the right place? I can understand in the soapbox, but not here. In any case, I have no access to that site from here. Perhaps you can simply describe it.

If you can't access it why assume it is bad? Just showing a little humor.

You whinge, in the Soapbox, that people have a vendetta against you. Yet, you have no problem coming into the lounge and getting personal about someone. That is just unacceptable - keep the vitriol for the SoapBox. I have judged your action, and judged it as trolling. I know that you will justify this as "humour". That is your justification every time you are called out. It is no truer now than it has been in the past.

I came across this the other day: http://thenounproject.com/[^] Good if you want monochrome glyphs, or a source of inspiration otherwise. Usually I use this handy piece of software: http://www.axialis.com/iconworkshop/[^] since I can't draw worth a crap.
