I know programmers lead a very sedentary life and are not all that active. However, I know some of you are avid fitness buffs. I've decided to become less sedentary and more active and I've got a question about headphones. I'm looking for a good pair of headphones that will stay put when I'm running, are resistant to sweat, and sound decent. What do the savvy recommend? I've considered the Bose IE2, the Sennheiser 680 line, and various others. I'm looking more for wired headphones than wireless, if that makes a difference.

Don't blame me. I voted for Chuck Norris.

For exercising, go for the cheap ones. I've been using sony's bud earphones for years (I usually use 1, 2 pairs every year). Big headphones get heavy and not very comfortable with the heat and the sweat.

      Watched code never compiles.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh, only a proper geek decides to exercise more but starts with checking reviews of fitness related electronics on the net first :)

i find that the standard iPod earphones work perfectly well when running. never had one get even close to falling out. they just rest at the bottom of your ear - they're not an insert. plus, since they aren't sound-isolating, i can still hear cars and whatnot. i tried some over-the-ear clippy things, and some foamy insert things, but the iPods not only sounded the best, but feel better, too. i do put the cord under my shirt, to keep it out of the way. at work, i have some nice Shures.

I have a pair of JVC marshmallow earbuds. The memory foam ear pieces don't fit my ears well and pop out as soon as I start jogging and sweating.

I started exercising in January and have lost almost 20 pounds since. I have been using some JVC earbuds up until now. The memory foam ear pieces don't fit my ears well and as I'm running farther and longer it's getting very aggravating having to replace my earbuds every few minutes. I'm looking for something better.

I definitely don't want noise cancelling or sound isolating headphones. I run on a road that's pretty low traffic, but I still want to be able to hear what's going on around me. I run with my dog for protection, but he's just a pup and doesn't alert me to danger yet.

I run between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM. I see on average 1 moving car and 10 moving deer a day when I'm running. I run with my large Australian Cattle Dog for protection from the boogeyman and the deer. I do worry more about personal safety than most people. I jog on the sidewalk which is about 3 feet from the road. It's a residential area so there are lots of parked cars along the street so I'm not worried a car will jump up onto the sidewalk and get me. I also wear a headlamp when jogging so I can see where I'm going and I look around quite frequently to make sure something's not stalking me. Really the biggest thing I have to worry about is rabid skunks. I'm not looking for noise-cancelling or sound isolating headphones. I just want a good pair of headphones that won't pop out of my ears, slide off my head, or break when sweated upon. Besides, if I don't wear headphones how will I hear the nice lady in my phone telling me how far I've gone and encouraging me to keep up the pace?

http://www.jaybirdgear.com/jf3/[^] I use these Jaybird Freedom headphones. Good sound, light weight, excellent fit and Bluetooth so no cords to mess with and get in the way.

I use the ones that came with the iPod as well and never have any issues with them coming out. I wouldn't use expensive ones to work out since there's the possibility of them breaking with the moisture from the sweat. I've actually had one set break because of the sweat, now I'm more careful with getting sweat on the earphones.

Something cheap. If you're running or outdoors then you'll have wind and noise and stuff so perfect sound reproduction isn't something you should aim for. You're also going to lose them, wash them, get them caught in your bike chain / shoelaces / gym bag zipper / bencpress machine and so they'll get wrecked. I use the bog standard earphones that come with my iPhone because it means while I'm riding I can listen to music (quietly) and catch calls with the mic. I'm sure those on the other end wonder why there's all this heavy breathing and panting on my end while I'm talking to them on the bike.

cheers, Chris Maunder The Code Project | Co-founder Microsoft C++ MVP

My experience with B&O headphones is quite awesome. the sound quality if superb and B&O actually does some stress testing on products too(to see effects of sweat, smoke etc).

I'd recommend a cheapish pair of in-ear phones with a loop over the ear to hold them in place. In my experience, when running, you need awareness of things around you so having music too loud is bad, so you don't need 100% perfect reproduction.

Not if they've heard about you they don't.

I started exercising in January and have lost almost 20 pounds since. I have been using some JVC earbuds up until now. The memory foam ear pieces don't fit my ears well and as I'm running farther and longer it's getting very aggravating having to replace my earbuds every few minutes. I'm looking for something better.
