I didn't think devs did that...

No, I made 2 statements, the first I pointed out that intelligence does not necessarily denote common sense and the other saying that intelligence and addiction are not mutually exclusive. It may well be that an intelligent person that drinks also has no common sense, but it doesn't always follow. In any case, drinking alcohol is no different from taking any other drug. I'm not bothered about the legal ethics as I think all drugs should be legally available. My point was that just because someone is intelligent doesn't mean they're immune to addiction or stupid behavior and I count myself in that lot as we all, at some time or other, do stupid things.

Sorry but what exactly are you talking about?

No idea what that means. A beer a day has no relation at all to mainlining heroin. And neither is similar to taking morphine for terminal cancer.

Then you're reply should have been shorter?

Nit pick much? Obviously he's not talking about a beer a day. Of coarse, we can expect that since you started with "No idea what that means".

I'm not saying I didn't do it when I was younger. I've done my share of bland to hardcore stuff, and lots of it. I just grew out of it. I think this might have more to do with different classes and types of people I'm around. I still have friends that I knew when we were all poor (and they still are). I also have middle class friends who are educated about health and what not. I am also around professional fighters and athletes because of my training classes... and they would all look at you like you had something contagious if you smoked pot or did hard core drugs. Most of them do drink casually, but they look cautiously at drinking. They don't say anything outright to the drinkers, but you can tell. I think a mix of all that may have led to my confusion. The middle class people either don't do it (or most likely are better at hiding it) , the athletes don't do those types of drugs, and the people I knew from before pretty much all drink and smoke [mostly more than one substance]. Somehow I just decided in my head that developers/ computer scientists don't smoke.....

Culture. There might be some professions/social gatherings that tend to average more or less but within each category the average is dictated by the culture. I suspect but have no real knowledge that any group with younger people and more oriented towards 'entertaining' (using that very loosely) would tend to have a higher average. Naturally there will be statistical deviations from the average, regardless of where it is established.

Thanks for that. Some people are a bit slow on the uptake. :)

Perhaps you need to get out more?

Certainly talking about alcohol however since he specifically said that. Other than that there is no context except it seems one of complete abstinence. So the phrase I quoted is still in doubt since, again there are a great deal of difference between casual usage, individual variances, how they are used and what the drugs are. Similar to my mind in claiming that a player of an electronic violin is no different than an embedded C programmer because both use an electronic device.

However the statement seemed to suggest that addiction was the only outcome or at least a significantly expected outcome. And that of course is wrong.

I wonder how you came to that conlcusion? I'm willing to bet you are the only reader who thought so.
