Gaming in 2012...

Retro is the new key/buzz word for gaming in 2012. Legend of Grimrock is a modern spinoff of old-style dungeon crawler like dungeon master; new twist is that it is real-time, not turned based; time-based puzzles are somewhat hard, combat is easy once you get the hand of it, it's a nice game to play for a few minutes at a time. Diablo III (open beta), it looks a lot like D2, but there's more content, skills feel nice and all the different combat "acheivement" are a cool improvement on the basic combat that D2 offered. The only issue is that they have server problems and it's hard to get in of you leave a game. Weather is crappy (november in april); I have small errands to take care of and will buy food/booze and play the rest of the week-end. M.

If I want retro, I'll get my old Atari ST out of the shelf. Or one of the other old boxes. Anyway, Dungen Master was not turn based. It was real time, but at a slow pace. The monsters would take your guys apart if you took a little too much time. You see, I used to be an adventurer, but then I took an arrow to my knee... As for Diablo III: I can't wait to ignore it. The first two already were a little too braindead for me. As most things Blizzard has erver produced. If they ever want to earn some money from me they better bring not too much 'retro'. Anyway, have fun with them.

When I find myself feeling nostalgic I run for Home of the underdogs[^] to find a game, usually Reunion[^], download Dos Box[^] and spend hours remembering old times. We just don't get good games like old times.

I've been following the development of Grimrock and it looks cool. Hopefully I'll get to it soon. I may or may not play D3... it all depends upon finances and mood. For my buck, I've playing Planet Calypso (previously Entropia Universe, which was previously Project Entropia) again and enjoying the new graphics and other changes they made to the game. I've probably been playing this one off and on for 7 years or more. I also have a heavy time investment in Minecraft. It may not be totally retro, but the blocky graphics are decidedly old-school, plus it's cheap and still fun after a year of near constant play.

I recently picked up the Might and Magic role-playing series from GOG.com. I hadn't played any of the games past the Xeen games (4 & 5) before and I picked up all 9 games in the main series for $14. I also recently picked up Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics for $9. :) For my PS3, I've been playing Final Fantasy XIII-2, Batman: Arkham Asylum and DC Universe Online. Flynn

Although it's console stuff, my son is big into retro cartridge games. He's just working his way through Megaman 3. :-D
