LOL. I'm not doing homework. I read this[^] and it occured to me that people probably have different opinions on what "cloud storage" means, so I thought I'd ask. I didn't post this initially because I didn't want to pre-empt any answers.

Say you have a 1TB hard disk. If you sell the disk to one customer, that is ordinary storage. If you sell the same 1TB disk space to 10,000 users, that is cloud storage.

At this point in time, not much. I can be useful to store some small amount of data, but for larger quantity, it is useless for ordinary users because most providers caps the data plans and charge indecent fees for extra MB. The only use I got from DropBox is to send/receive small files from home to work, but I could have used a USB key for that. Other than that, as I said not much.

Watched code never compiles.

A cloud is something most people would not use when it's to be paid. So in reality no one needs it.

Data storage that is accessible from anywhere (with an Internet connection, obviously) and provides a transparent or semi-transparent API so your applications can interact with files stored on it (otherwise it's just a backup service). And, to make it 'cloud' and not just 'online', all the details about actually hosting it, scalability of storage space, replication and backups, machine administration etc are handled by the provider (which is what you pay for).
