Yup it's a game companies play with the under-performing ones. It's kinda garbage collection when they feel ship is starting to bloat. Nothing unusual.

I was laid off once. I was working in a laboratory. I immediately enrolled in a basic IT class and about 5 years (after an education/internship) accepted a job earning 2X what I was making in the laboratory. Getting laid off from that job is one of the best things that ever happeed to me.

Underperforming means different things to different companies. If Developer Joe does twice the work of Developer Dan, he has twice the opportunity to create defects. If you work in a zero-defect environment, you don't want to be Joe.

Objectives are not set in comparison with the other. They have individual sheets. Attributes what we have in our sheets are crystal clear. If they fail to achieve those, they'll be considered under performing and put to training. This iteration would continue for few times until he's gets fired.

I was laid off once. It was the best thing that ever happened for my career. I hope your situation turns out well.
