As a tike an Atari 800XL cost me 6 months allowance and several lawns cut. Now an XBOX 360 cost is equivalent to 2 days per diem.

I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

For me games have lost the enjoyment for a few of reasons: - too many first person shooters. Yawn. Including so called computer RPGS - yes it really helps immersion in the game world to have your character having the same level of intelligence and manual dexterity. Tits to that, I want to play a role, not me in a funny suit. If I wanted a funny suit I'd become a furry. - lots of developers and publishers place graphical sophistication over making an interesting game. They seem to think a game is just like an interactive film with as few controls and choices as possible. Ooo look at the game world graphics, aren't they good? Shame you can't do anything apart from fairly tightly scripted choices. Does it sound like I'm ranting? And I work in the effing industry. When I were a lad 'twere all fields 'round 'ere...

Remember Sunday afternoon after church when you didn't feel like playing outside so you laid on the living room floor and played games until six, ate dinner with the 'rents and then played some more before bed realizing that you had just wasted your Sunday? Then remember how it really didn't matter because Monday was just a Monday and life had no responsibilities so it didn't matter that you wasted your day? I still have the games and I still play but, somehow, if I waste Sunday playing, I feel worse for it than I did when I was a kid and that is why Video Games have lost their luster. I suppose if I smoked pot or something they might regain their once sacred spot in funness.

Thats what I see as well. Too much emphasis on graphics and with that First Person shooters are most game studios flag ship. The problem is also that all of the easy "WOW" concepts have been run through. Games like Tetris and Donkey Kong were ground breaking. But look at the regurgitation. Most game "genres" trace back to the "WOW" game that everyone loved and loves but has put down do to graphics obsolecence. In addition some games don't matter with suped up graphics. Tetris is Tetris is Tetris. I dont really care how many colors there are. Its still freaking tetris and I am bored of it. So with that the game industry focused on what they could repackage again and again, i.e. FPS. I think they missed some games and genres but that was a marketing decision of course. With that said, I am outy as it is Friday and I am eager to play some more Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. The game is great. But it is an anomoly in the industry at this point.

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

I'm with Aesc (above poster) on this one. Games are made like movies now. Often they take as long, cost as much to produce, and have the same amount of people working on them. What does this mean? Well, the producers want return on investment. How do they do that? Play it safe. Most games are just reiterations and bastardizations of games that already exist and have been exploited to the bone. I have gamefly and try a lot of games but like very few. Also, because there is so much money involved, and so many people working on it, they are created by committee which I am starting to feel more and more leads to mediocrity. Movies and TV's shows written via committee suck compared to one where someone has a clear artistic / creative lead / vested interest.

I think that's what's missing these days. Most games have very similar story lines these days. Also, a particular rant I've had for a long time: WHY OH WHY are games that run on things like IPads and IPods (despite running on far more powerful games than classic games run on) absolute shit?! Why would I want to play some crappy game where all you do is simple mundane tasks (E.G. Angry birds, a game I've seen where you throw fruit around and then cut it up, various driving games) Classic games were made to be FAR better than this in less program space and on systems with limited memory and processing power. Thing's like Zork could keep you entertained for hours, all the games that run on IPads are crappy and maybe keep you interested for a few minutes. In fact, they are all like the Flash games you can find to play on the internet.

Could be that the magic is gone because you've been there and done that. Or some of these factors might be part of it. Remember when we used to call things "Nintendo hard"? That concept has largely gone out the window, except for some indie games like VVVVVV (that's 6 Vs). Then look at RPGs. Games like the 2D Squaresoft games were great because you eventually opened up a humongous world with lots of things to do. Now when you buy an RPG, you either have to buy an MMORPG or get what's been called a "hallway simulator". I'd rather have to figure things out myself and spend a lot of time exploring! EA killed off a lot of great powerhouses like Bullfrog, Firaxis, Maxis, Origin... Those guys were making great original games. Rare got bought by Microsoft, so no more Donkey Kong, and the Goldeneye rights are a total mess. Have you tried looking at the indie bundles on Steam? There are a lot of great choices out there that get zero marketing.

Then you also know how users are. They don't care very much about your brilliant programming as long as it does not make their computer explode. Unlike all other features your game may or may not have the graphics can be shown on the box, in ads or in the internet. Nobody really reads endless sermons from marketing. It's images that get the customer's attention, nothing else. And let's talk about fans. They always want exactly what they are used to, yet in unexpected new ways. They will shriek and snarl if you change too much. They will also shriek and snarl if you change too little. You might get away with changing nothing and selling it to them a second time as 'expansion'. Otherwise it's better to work on those things they can't possibly mind (the graphics) and be very careful with everything else. Understandable with those production costs at stake. You mentioned scripts and how they are an inadequate substitute for real AI. True, but how often have you seen such an AI in a game? How many programmers do you have that could pull that trick off without seriously endangering the project? It's still a field with more questions than answers. I have tried my luck and even got some results. You could give it inputs and than ask it what it wants to do. It started with no knowledge at all and over time it learned how to interpret the inputs and make valid decisions, including picking the right moment to give up when facing defeat. I change the rules and it adapted. It would also have adapted when players found out how to defeat it. Sounds like a vast improvement over scripts, right? The downside was that it was unpredictable how it would adapt. One of its earliest strategies was to run away at the first sign of trouble. Artificial cowards. A good choice because their primary goal was survival, but also not really good for creating an exciting game. If it 'learned' that we are using them as cannon fodder it might very well be that they go back to that behavior at any time. Or they might actually find a disadvantage of the players to exploit and become almost invincible.

At least artificial intelligence already is superior to natural stupidity

Maybe because they leave very little to the imagination - back in the eighties when chuckie egg[^] and atic atac[^] were all that was available, in terms of high end graphics on home computers, the graphics were not what counted but the anticipation and discovery within the game were what made it enjoyable.

I know when I was a kid money was an issue with games. I only had a limited number of games so I played and played them until I knew every little piece. Now that I can and usually do buy 10-20 games a year I don't have the time to invest in each one as I did when I was younger.

i've given up on FPS's. these days, i play mostly cheap games from small developers - Plants vs Zombies, iBomber, Unstoppable Gorg (all tower defense games), Braid, Limbo (puzzle side-scrollers), etc.. they don't cost much, they don't last long, they don't need huge hardware. good simple fun. if i don't like it, i'm out $10, no big deal.

Nostalgia is not good for the gamers's soul. You've just grown older. I still play, and I can't stand older games.
