It adds up quick don't it? I've done the same recently with photography equipment.

Wait till you take up golf! £300 for a driver, £300 for a set of decet irons. £150 for a bag, then add in the balls, tees and towels. Of course the shoes aren't cheap, my Footjoys were £115. So maybe £1000 and you haven't stepped onto a golf course yet! Membership is £800 a year, plus £25 green fees per round. Then we go to other courses and that can be expensive. I played the Celtic Manor 2010 Championship course, and that is £75 for a round. On the other hand, as any other member who plays golf will tell you, you don't even notice the expense when you are listening to the ping of the driver as your ball sweeps away from you in a dead straight line and finishes 300 yards away. There is no feeling like sinking that 30ft putt for a birdie or pitch from 50 yards that ends up a foot from the hole.

That's one of the reasons I never took it up, fraid I would get addicted. Another reason is my son would always try to get me to go with him with the excuse; Him: Dad you ought to go it's so relaxing and we have a good time. Me: Son what happened to your club why is it bent like that? Him: I don't want to talk about it.

Always throw your club down the course, it saves you walking back to get it! It is good exercise though. (Although when you are playing in the wind and the rain in the middle of winter you can think of better places to be!) It is a totally obsessional game and easy to get addicted to, ask any wife, they are known as 'Golf Widows[^]' I am trying to convince Michelle to take it up so we can spend more time together.

"Humans are amphibians ... half spirit and half animal ... as spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time. This means that while their spirit can be directed to an eternal object, their bodies, passions, and imaginations are in continual change, for to be in time, means to change. Their nearest approach to constancy, therefore, is undulation: the repeated return to a level from which they repeatedly fall back, a series of troughs and peaks.” C.S. Lewis

If ever I go broke, I might take up golf. I have a 50* foot sailboat in the local marina. Mooring fees $4k p.a. Insurance $3k p.a. Annual haul-out + anti-fouling $2k p.a. General maintenance $2k p.a. Incidental costs (outboard petrol, water-maker filters etc. etc. ad infinitum) $1k p.a. This winter I flushed the diesel tanks, so they will have to be refilled - one thousand litres - about $2k nm.p.g under power = 2 I only mention this because I am just now recommissioning her for the summer season, and the bills are rolling in! I think my 'hobby' is a lot more affordable. $115 every six months for running shoes, plus fees for whatever races I run. Fees range from $3 for Ohio River Road Runners[^] club events to $105 for the Flying Pig Marathon[^] which I'm running next weekend. I probably spend around $400 a year.

Running is not a hobby, it is a chore :) I swore the day I left the Army that I would never run again, and so far I haven't. I used to run marathon distances, but usually in boots and 'Greens', so I was fit as elephant, but in the intervening years I have slothed my way to middle aged unfitness, and very happy I am too.

I personally would have put the money into a V8 instead of personalizing the car. But then again I would also rather get a '69 instead.

...and so you should! :) Not only have I eased you conscience, but if you let your good lady see my post, you can point out to her how cheap your golfing really is. However, I suggest you do that just after you have bought a new set of top bats clubs.

I just added up all the money I've spend on the car. NOT counting the car itself, I'm less than $50 shy of $10K - so far.

When I first read the title of your post, I thought you had been electrocuted! Then I read your post. How much did the car itself cost?

Twin 50 caliber machine guns and armor plating add significantly to the cost, as well as compromise fuel efficiency.
