I hate HP printers
-
Printers suck. It's a law of nature. Try to cancel a print job someday if you need to waste a lot of time. Good thing no one actually prints anything anymore.
My favorite HP printer feature, back in the Win9x days, was that you had to reboot the PC after you cancelled a print job. The printer driver wouldn't print again after that.

It's possible, but some ink jet printers will do photo black by using all the color cartidges instead of the black one. There might be a setting in the default printer properties for this.

Well, maybe I hate all printers, I don't use printer that much. I was trying to print a page using black ink only, the printer refused to do the job because it was out of one of color inks. Have you ever go to a store to buy orange and the store refused to sell orange because they are out of apple? Let's not mention the cost of ink.
That's partly why I use Epson - the print head isn't part of the ink cartridge, and each colour is separate, so if cyan runs out, you don't have to chuck magenta and yellow as well. You do realise that the cost of ink is what makes a profit for HP? That if they make any money at all on the printer it's a bonus? Certainly, when I working the Industrial Ink Jet market, selling the machine at a loss was pretty common - because the markup on the ink was in the region of x60 over cost.

The other thing about Epson is that the paper path tends to be sane. In HPs it is nomally fed from the bottom and comes through 180° to get to the tray. Epsons tend to be back-fed and come through 90°, when I was a techie the Epsons would jam far less. I have to use HP here. I suspect there is some sought of deal with the government here. HP has a huge building next to the Minstry of Defence (I think). Few people here have heard of Epson. Just another reason Jordan is such a world economic powerhouse :~

Quite true. We build commercial ink jet printers, where the system price can be $1.5M or more. Margins on hardware sales are very small. We make money on the 'annuity' parts of the business - printhead refurbishment, service, and to some extent ink. In our case the printhead is a $50K or more item to replace. After several hundred hours of use, print defects and operational problems start happening due to wear and tear, some chemical, some physical. We can refurbish printheads at a lot lower than replacement cost. This is a complicated system; we print full-color, front and back, at up to 17 feet of paper per second. There's a lot of stuff on this puppy that can break. For that reason, most of our customers sign a usage-based service agreement. We keep their machine running, and charge them based on their amount of usage. I don't think we're too into the ink market any longer. There are economies of scale there that don't pan out for us. It's sort of like buying gasoline at the Ferrari dealership; you could, but why?

Typically printer drivers are perfect devil incarnations, specially the ones from hp...

My HP printer has an option, on the printer itself, to ignore ink levels and print anyway. So even when all the software reports cartridges as empty you can still use them (as they're not actually empty). I do have a larger laser printer though, so maybe they're only trying to bleed inkjet users dry.

Have to agree - I used to hate it when people tried to print labels on HP, as the damn things would peel off and stick to the machine. Plus I can happily get 260gsm though my Epson without it jamming or looking like a toilet roll when it comes out the other end.

I dont like HP product either. ink run out fast and the scanner fail completely when i try to scan multiple file. it break up the images in strange pattern and make a meaningless document

Separate colors isn't just an Epson thing. Moreover, most models have the same feature of refusing to print if one color is out of ink.

Almost all, perhaps all inkjet prints do this. My daughter's Epson does this. We looked around for an alternative which would print black regardless of the levels of the colors and found exactly none. I had an Epson Inkjet years ago. It was the worse printer I've ever owned. It went through ink like crazy, had slightly inaccurate color (everything had a tad too much red) and if it wasn't used for more than a few days, the ink heads would clog and it would churn through ink cleaning them out. On the other hand, my brother periodically uses an HP inkjet that is twenty years old! My conclusion: inkjets suck. (Let me amend that: whatever printer you are currently using usually sucks. However the HP 2150dn I bought, which my ex-wife now owns, is awesome. My HP 4P was awesome, but now won't stay on. I can't bring myself to throw it away.)

HP 3310 (all-in-one) offers to print black when it doesn't have the color.

A) The HP 3310 is not new B) I've read lots of complaints that says you can't print when a color cartridge is empty.
