'World's 50 Best Restaurants' in 2012[^]. Not been to any of them though I did sort of overindulge at the weekend and have 2 of these: Single Steakhouse Burger [^]; probably not good enough to make the list but bloody tasty.

Are these the most popular or just the most expensive? $250 for a 'tasting menu' and you have to wait 3 1/2 hours to get your food.

For me a good restaurant must be within reach for cost, good food, enough food, and good service. I do not want a $20 appetizer that is exotic or a steak that cost more than my first car ($75). I agree with Mark that a good burger might be better that meals for some of these 50 best.

None of them are winning web design awards. I do know people who have gone to Alinea, but not heard too much either way about it. I think it's a little self serving for restaurants to charge so much. You pay that much to eat there, but won't admit it's not that good or you'd look the fool, for: A) paying that much for mediocre food. B) not knowing what you are talking about/going against major food critics.

Even foodie comments are laced with US politics  First 2 comments. Will These lists are just the gastronomic manifestation of the all-too familiar (and hilarious) pseudo-intellectual delusion that is the hallmark of modern-day liberals. But as always, reality sits in direct opposition to liberal fantasy... there are literally tens of thousands of small hole-in-the-wall type restaurants in the small towns of the world, each of which prepares food that is far, far superior to anything concocted by the bastions of pretentious self-glorification that buy their way onto this type of list. May 1, 2012 at 11:44 am | Reply Barack O'Romney This list is pure bull. I was in Copenhagen and met people coming out of NoNo. The name alone should be your clue!`The number one restaurant serves raw vegetables on a bed of dirt and grass. Cows at least are served grains! The top fancy joints serve pig fat and grease over everything and the snobs lap it up like pigs. Small portions and inflated prices to match the inflated egos! Avoid ANY place on the list and just eat raw cholesterol for the same effect and safe a thousand bucks!
I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

I think the list is biased based on where the people interviewed live.

I've been to a few of them in France and I always had a good time and excellent food. They are not your everyday restaurants, you eat there, for either the experience or for special occasions. 1. They are not all overly expensive restaurants, taking into account the cost of living in big cities ( i.e. Le Chateaubriand in Paris, Momofuku's ssam Bar in NY, Dinner in London ), but some of them are _very_ expensive, quality has a price (not just in restaurants), and if you add up the cost of booze, it can go up quite fast (30e for a glass of Champagne for example :omg: ) 2. You get what you pay for, in quantity and quality of the food and the service. I've been stuffed with extra unannounced dishes at some of the place I visited; but in general, the menus are optimized so you can have 3 normal courses (apps, entree, dessert) and leave the restaurant just full enough; if you take a "tasting" menu, the pacing of all the dishes still let you eat food from the amuse-bouche to the last dessert after the last dessert... Don't get me wrong, I still like to stop for a quick dumpling or a good taco or some ribs, but those are everyday food, not high-end food experience.

My French teacher told me that in France many places will have tables that will only be used by one party on a given night. There is an expectaction that you are there for the socializing as well as the food. I wonder if that 3.5 hours is for the first serving or for all of the food in multiple stages.
