    Hello, I was happy with my first job in a mid-size software organisation (work, team, pay were all good) but had to change because I had to move to a different city to stay close to my family. I got a job in one of the biggest software company in the world. I joined thinking the bigger company would provide be better future prospective but honestly I am tied in a company where I cannot apply myself. I have to work on a framework which I don't really like, the work process is laborious. Getting simple things done takes lots of time because things going round-n-round. I think I have made a mistake by changing the job only to move to a different city. More than that, taking up a job going by the Company's reputation instead of checking out the work I would be doing. I have been working since three years and learned so many thing during the first job because I got a bigger view of the work to be done. I am now just applying what I learnt in my earlier company, no new learning for me expect working on a application framework which is recognized elsewhere. I don't feel good working here, I don't want to change the job because its been just 6 months here. How should I proceed.

    Why do you think your employeer is responsible for your on going education?

    Stick it out, learn something new in your own time, apply it at work & make sure everyone knows about it.

      I don't think my employer is responsible for the education, I wanted to mention that I had many opportunities at my old employer to learn new stuff.

      Thank you. I will take out some of my team to learn stuff, don't know if I can apply at work. Wanted to know what should one check before you change your job.. Thanks.

        You're welcome. Truth be told I've never worked for an organisation like that but I can imagine it might be a bit limiting. Good luck.

          I work for a very large employer too and can understand what you mean about being limited. We are restricted very tightly - we cannot install any software without a very thorough vetting process which takes weeks to months via a panel. I have also worked for a medium sized business where everyone was installing this and that new app every day and IT support was spending its time virus hunting... There is not really a quick answer - there are always limitations in any choice made, it is however possible to learn new things in a large company so don't be disheartened if you don't have the freedom you had previously.

            Working in mid-size was easier to for me to express my ideas. If I thought I had a better idea for a UI, I would go and show it to the PM. Here everything is decided and comes out in a document. Very difficult for ideas to travel in bottom up direction.

              I actually had that issue at a smaller company (about medium size). At a much larger company (makes billions each year, has thousands of employees), software developers are split into various departments. In my department, I often get the chance to work things in. Though, at a much smaller company (less than 10 employees), I got to build more stuff from scratch using my own designs, so that was the best situation as far as independence goes. I think it really depends on the company though (rather than just the size).

                I would hedge my bets. Start looking for a new job - this time there is no pressure - while trying to make the best of the present job. Good Luck

                  Since you don't want to change jobs yet, while waiting, I suggest you learn other new stuff that you can use later on for your job applications. I'm currently in the same dilemma as you are. The team I belong currently support many applications that are written in .Net 1.0 and .Net 1.1, so there's really nothing new to learn, especially because its a support job, and almost all of the features are all created. But I don't want to change jobs yet because, I don't think it would be impressive for the interviewers if I mention that my recent job was supporting ancient technology. So what I'm doing now is I'm learning new technologies (and probably(hopefully) write some articles later on), so I can have something new to put on my resume.

                  Signature construction in progress. Sorry for the inconvenience.

                    Often happens. Start looking around for another job. Its impossible to know what the vibe of a firm is till you start working for it, and bigv or small they can be great, or crap, so its pot luck really.

                    ============================== Nothing to say.

                      I remembered something one of my earlier manager told me. When you join a organisation, observe people around you; after couple of months you should find at least one person whom you can idolize, the person you want to become after couple of years. If you don't find any, you are at a wrong place. I have found none so far.

                        I'd say look now, if you are really nervous about how it looks to serve a short stint, tough it out 12 months, then look. I'd say do what you'll be happy with. As far as what to look for. Try to find out exactly what you'll be doing, working, etc before you accept. If possible, talk to people in the position you will have, either on linked in, or in person, formally/informally, whatever. I wish I did that at my last job. In my current job, I had a pretty good understanding of my day to day before I accepted.
