Can you not limit your search to .ico file formats?

I can, but I’m behind a Websense barbwire fence, so I can only download them from the Google main page, not from the source website.

Thanks, that’s what I was searching for. Do you have any idea what this license (link to the author) means. If it’s a web site it is okay. But how I’m supposed to satisfy the license in a desktop application? Probably the “About” dialog?

About Dialog would be OK on my book. To be completely sure you'd have to contact the author. Some might be ok with a link somewhere in the documentation, others might ask for a 28pt blinking splash screen with sound effects.

I’m searching for a good site for free icons. I came upon softicons.com which looks good, but the icons are free only for personal use. The Microsoft clipart collection is not very comprehensive. Searching for icons with Google works like a charm, but “save image as” option gives you only a .bmp format so you lose all transparency for the .png images. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully you don't just Google random images and use them as icons on a commercial product. :~

Well, I’m not an artist so the only option I have is to use free images, or to buy a collection if it’s cheap. What other choices are out there?

Nothing wrong with that, so long as they're really free. If you find them using a Google image search, that doesn't mean they're free. Somebody may have paid an artist to make them, and they may own the rights to that image. If you get them from a free icon website, that's perfectly fine. But Google is not a free icon website.

I’m fully aware of this, hence my question about the “link” type of license earlier in the thread. If I decide to use any icon protected from this type of license or GNU license I will have to buy them anyway, but at least I want to try them for free with a correct format, size and transparency.
