I experience a certain "rush" about solving a problem elegantly (which means a variety of things, like in 10% of the time I predicted, or in a piece of code that really reflect a deep understanding of the problem, etc). It IS a bit like sex, there's an intimacy with the code, the accomplishment of something that satisfies the user, and so forth.

That only occurs when I'm forced, usually by management, to make compromises, and when what I do has a direct impact on the company (sometimes in the order of millions of dollars) and my "recognition" of what I've done for the company is rewarded by "please provide the pros and cons of your approach to this next problem" which is a veiled way of management saying "I am threatened by your skill and I don't trust you." It's unfortunate that there isn't clearer communication, transparency, and recognition because of the egos involved. While I am in some ways offended by the term "brogrammer", I do sincerely hope that what we are witnessing is the evolution of a more emotionally and socially mature tech industry. Sadly, keg parties and picking up girls is indicative of an emotional/social intelligence that knows how to use those skills for personal, ego-gratifying gains, rather than true social benefits. But one rude noise generator sold for .99 to 10000 morons doesn't make you a developer. It makes you a semi-lucrative script kiddie. Most of these 'brogrammer start-ups will crash and burn just like all the other "I've got a great idea and lots of money" start-ups before them. Technology has evolved to the state that it doesn't require a computer science degree to create applications. But to create well structured, performant, extensible code it takes more than reading a few How To articles or For Dummies books.
Failure is not an option; it's the default selection.
