:) Too true. Globally unique, in fact.

How ironic that something supposed to represent uniqueness, has mutliple pronounciations. :)

Individuality is fine as long as everyone is the same.

What is the proper pronunciation for GUID? 1) goo-id like fluid 2) gwid like squid? I have always said and heard gwid but at my new job they say goo-id and it sounds funny. Makes me laugh every time.

Gwid like squid. Where there are multiple acceptable pronunciations of a word I will always choose the one with the fewest syllables--it only makes sense. Sequel instead of S-Q-L, gwid instead of goo-id, etc.

I use 1 and I think it has more logic, as far as you can use that with English. 'qu' is a two character single sound, so the vowel there is 'i', not 'ui' as in GUID. The analogy is fluid or ruin and I can't think of an English word with ui (that isn't qui) that is pronounced the other way. (Cuisine doesn't count, it's not of English origin.) You could use 'fruit' as an analogy (gyoud?) but I think that would just be too weird.

Isn't it Globally Unique IDentifier? Therefore if you're going to pronounce it as a word 'ID' should be pronounced however you pronounce ID (as in identifier, not ego). To me, this precludes the 'fluid' interpretation. Then again, I pronounce it as G U I D, so what do I know?

'gwide' (like 'pride'), then? I don't think that acronyms have to be pronounced in a way that reflects what they're put together from, though.

What is the proper pronunciation for GUID? 1) goo-id like fluid 2) gwid like squid? I have always said and heard gwid but at my new job they say goo-id and it sounds funny. Makes me laugh every time.

I've heard it both ways. I used to pronounce it gwid like squid, but I changed to pronounce it like goo-id. Mostly I follow what everyone else around me is pronouncing it to avoid confusion. But I think I'll start pronouncing it like gweed as in 'weed' just for fun.
