Hey all, I bought a new computer 5-6 months ago and I have windows XP. I would like to format my drive and have a new fresh system. How do I go about doing that. I am new to WindowsXP. Do i need a XP CD ? My manufacture didn't provide me with one. Thanks!

yes, i have no CD at all. Back to my orginal question, if i DID have one, how would i go about installing it.
Boot from the CD and choose the option to format the drive, unless you're unable to back up your data, in which case you need to boot to DOS somehow ( I use my 98 CD) and then delete the Windows directory before rebooting from the XP CD and installing from there. There is a version around that does not need to be Microsoft verified, so if it's a generic manufacturer it's more likely than not it's a pirate. Until people start returning them immediately, and refusing to accept this crap, it's only going to get worse. I think I'll order an HP tonite, just to refuse to accept delivery of their 'defective' merchandise. Nobody wants to read a diary by someone who has not seen the shadow of Bubba on the prison shower wall in front of them!

I would always want the source CD with me, but OEMs are not necessarily required to supply the CDs anymore ...they do have to supply the registration key and certificate, but not the source. If there is a crash, they will send you a newly imaged drive and you have to use the original registration key to activate it. The company I work for ships PCs in this configuration. It is disgusting, but legal under our licensing agreement with Microsoft. Don't ask what happens after the warranty period expires! :omg: Regards, Paul...

If you call the HP support, you can request your backup CDs that should have come with the PC. Microsoft gives them a better deal for not providing the discs. Another way to stop piracy. Then your hard drive blows and you need them. Anyway HP will charge you $12.00 to get them. Oh, and its 12 CDs, that should tell you all the crap they install. Yeah, -bunch of s**t heads if you ask me.

Legal or not, it's an entirely unacceptable practice that has to end. A so called "Recovery CD" is not much better, but no CD is intolerable. I tell my customers regularly to check such things before they buy, and to refuse to do business with any company that stoops so low.
