Agent Ransack from Mythicsoft became my favorite utility last week when I had to find all references to a database table throughout 60+ software modules. Windows content search is useless anymore.

Just had a quick look and could see if this is a program that needs to be installed or can it run from a USB Drive?

It appears to be windoze only and has to be installed...but it's free. They do offer a 'professional' version for $39 (US), but I have yet to see where I might need it.

Been upgrading my Shareware purchases this week and thought I'd give some credit were I think it's due. IsBuster - Version 3.0 released and I got 30% off Royal TS - Version 2.0 released and I got 25% off Xplorer2 - Ultimate edition released, only had to pay the difference from the license I already had, $20 Total Commander - Version 8.0 released and I didn't have to pay a thing. Buy a license and all upgrades forever Anyone have any other great Shareware Tools/Utilitites they own or credit they want to give the authors?

When downloading the trial of ISOBuster 3, ESET is complaining about Win32/Toolbar.Conduit potentially unwanted application; is this optional to install? Thanks Edit: Just to answer my own question, yes it is an optional install.

Well, you can think of Visual Lint[^] as shareware if you like. :-\ The one I use most at the moment is probably WinCHM[^] - a simple and easy HTML help authoring package. Although its editing functions are basic, the thing I like about it is that aside from the contents file all data is stored as plain HTML files, so we don't need to worry about lock in (most of the time I edit HTML in Notepad2 anyway!). The Visual Lint documentation[^] was produced in WinCHM. Other longstanding essentials for me include SnagIt[^], Axialis Icon Workshop[^] (this one is an absolute must if you do UI, and they have a lifetime free upgrade policy which is frankly nuts) and Web Log Storming[^]. Incidentally Bits Du Jour[^] is a good place to find deep discounts on shareware products (their founder Nico was at ESWC last year, and he's a great guy...we shared many a beer that weekend!). Come to think of it, of the four products you list, three of the authors are ESWC regulars too.

ZTreeWin & Take Command - yes, I am unbelievably old ;) But most essential of all - BeyondCompare. Don't leave home without it. OK, it's a GUI app rather than a proper one, but utterly indispensable.

not really a tool/utility (well, it was used a lot in testing Win95), but my favorite shareware of probably all time would have to be the first episode of DOOM :)

A couple of utilities I like: FlashRenamer http://www.rlvision.com/[^] Great for cleaning up or mass renaming of files. Free Download Manager http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/[^] A multi stream downloader which allows your to resume failed downloads. Also downloads FLV's or entire web sites.

It hasn't been updated in a while, but SynchronizeIt![^] has been the best file/folder/archive synchronization tool I have used. It's companion tool Compare It![^] is pretty good too for file content comparison & merging, but I have found other free tools for that task that I like better.

Thanks for the reply and links. I'm looking really hard at SnagIt and expect I will buy tomorrow morning. I have a been comparing it to ScreenHunter (which is used by one of the clients at the site I'm working at) using the features listed on their homepage. It's pretty hard to really get an idea of which is better. So it'll come down to two things, one of which is a question for you. 1. I have found a discount code to get 50% off SnagIt, so it's leaning heavily in it's favour. 2. Can I select a set area of the screen which is he default area captured each time I hit the hot key? I used to use Freewarew called AndySnap and this was the bit I used the most. If I was using a Dialog based app, I would hit the Hot Key on the first screen, I could then select the area I wanted. Then every new screen I would hit the key, it would select the samearea of the screen and I would hit Enter and it would be saved to a file with the same name but with a number at the end incremented by 1.

I don't think SnagIt (at least in v9,. which is the version I have) remembers a selected region in the way you describe, but it does do Spy++ style selection of windows and controls to capture - whichh sounds like another way of doing the same thing. When you select that mode, it freezes the window as you hover over it, highlighting each child window until you select the one you want. Great for doing screenshots of dialogs and bits of dialogs. I find the ability to screenshot scrolling windows very useful, too.

Looking at the download page for Total Commander, I saw this... Still using Windows 3.1? Honestly, is anyone actually using 3.1?
