I just got asked by a fellow community member Roger Wright about my job title. He thought it sounds interesting and wants me to explain what do I do on a typical day :) So I thought I should start a new thread so that we can all shed some light on our Job Titles :) My Job Title: Strategy Developer My Company: Aurora Solutions My Company Profile: Aurora Solutions is a private software development and consultancy organization specialized in building financial technology and algorithmic trading solutions. We provide services for developing financial software to financial technology firms, hedge funds, retail brokers, market makers, exchanges and individual traders. Our team of seasoned software engineers and expert quant developers specializes in back testing and optimizing trading strategies as well as building intelligent real time automated trading systems aimed at meeting the growing needs of the market. Our high end services are known for its quality and effectiveness hard to to be matched in this domain by any other professional service provider. My Job Description: Being a Strategy Developer I have to write financial strategies. Simple, right? :P If you have read the company profile, you'd already have an idea about my job title. My responsibilities include writing highly efficient code that can perform at a very high frequency for incoming data (frequency of which is usually an update after every 10 mili seconds). I handle all the software development phases myself for a single strategy (from gathering requirement specifications to final user acceptance testing).

Thanks & Best Regards, Umer Aziz Malik Senior Strategy Developer Aurora Solutions (Pvt) Ltd.

Great thread, Umer! :-D I'm an Engineering Manager for a small company that has only two engineers; the other one is my boss, the General Manager. Obviously, I don't get to manage him. Instead, I do all the design work at our company, including electrical power systems, sewer and water distribution and collection systems, SCADA controls and internal processes. I also manage all construction projects, and have to handle customer relations. I don't know why I'm expected to do that last bit, but I do, and it sucks. If something goes wrong with our computers, I'm expected to fix it, too, and if we need a website built or maintained, I'm the one who gets stuck with the job. When there's custom software to be developed, I get that, too... So, what is your title, and what do you do?

      Will Rogers never met me.

My Job Title: Technical Specialist My Company Profile: I work for a company that provides group wide support to a range of companies all based on water supply and services to water supply companies (mostly). We currently have a 16 man development department (Group IT Systems - check out the initials) which consists of 2 teams of 4 developers and 1 lead developer, mostly doing VB ASP .Net (I think), 2 application support guys, 1 web designer, 1 DBA, and 2 Technical Specialists. We used to sit under a Development Manger, but since he left I report directly to the IT Director. My Job Description: (Official Role Profile) Responsible for carrying out the technical and functional planning, design, development, testing and deployment of software across the group and for ensuring those projects are completed to a high standard and on time. Responsible for investigating new technologies to ensure the group is maintaining a forward looking perspective utilising the best tool for each development. The technical specialist should be an expert in their chosen field and as such may have knowledge of fewer areas of the team's work than the team leaders. My Job Description: (what I actually do) I am in charge of our Sonic installation, server, coding, running, and everything else it does. Sonic is a JMS and ESB, and I stitch about a dozen different systems together with it. If anything isn't working I get blamed until I can pinpoint who or what is to blame. I also do some Progress development that I caught when the other TS was off sick a year ago and cannot shake off again. Plus some C# .Net WinForms stuff for a legacy mobile solution that has endured beyond our other C# stuff.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

I was a lead software developer once... until someone ask the team size ( 1 ) ..... I was the only one on project for a year and then I have to train 2 more developers so that I can handover project to them so I can really go and work with a team...

My job title is Director of IT. I was hired as a programmer, 3 months later the director quit, somebody ahd to keep the ship afloat(small it department for good sized company) 3 months after that they made it official that I was the permanent replacement. If it falls under IT in the remotest way, its my job and my problem, dealing with external website vendors, writing internal code, managing the network, servers, databases, virus cleanup, and the list goes on. I manage the entire IT department( which is just me, no help). Underpaid and overworked big time, but you know what? I enjoy the challenge, and considering I am only less than two years out of school and in this field, I'm pretty darn proud of myself and the Job I manage to do.( my network spans multiple states and countries.). There are days I look in the mirror and think "what the elephant did I get myself into?". I mainly wish I had time to write more code and less time fixing user stupidity, and dealing with idiot vendors that just cannot seem to understand I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND 100,000 on your crappy software when I have a solution in place that functions perfectly well.

Common sense is not a gift it's a curse. Those of us who have it have to deal with those that don't.... Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.

Last place I worked the IT Director was a director (and part owner) of the company. It got sold off, he made millions and rode of into the sunset in his brand new Maserati. They promoted from within, but gave the new bloke the job title 'Head of IT'. A few weeks later someone put out a press release to the trade proclaiming him 'Director of IT', so they had to give him that job title instead.

Interesting, the website says there are offices in Pakistan and Sweden, but the phone number is 312-725-xxxx, which is the Chicago Loop. Are there offices in Chicago? (I'm guessing maybe just sales).

I am the CEO, General Manager, Engineering Manager, Junior Engineer and Janitor for both Interamerican Petroleum Consultants and Comport Computing. Both company profiles are similar: Do whatever clients will pay for, then decide whether it fits more into engineering or software so I know which letterhead to use on invoices. My job is to do whatever needs to be done. I'd say the buck stops here, but actually my job is to get the buck started in the door. The buck stops (for practical purposes) when my wife spends it.

This is actual one of the few positions that excites me, but most places around here expect a Masters in computational finance to even get an interview (which I may go for after Miss Wiz's career takes off). Do you guys offer telecommuting?
