There have been about 500 posts in Site Bugs and Suggestions by people who have wondered the same thing. Short version: it's not a problem that needs solving, and any proposed solution so far is either more work than it's worth or would cause more problems than it solves.

I would heartily disagree with that and Chris has promised a solution though I suspect that hell will have long frozen over before he bothers to implement it. And yes, that was me who down-voted you for several reasons: 1) it's your opinion that it doesn't need solving 2) you have no idea if it would cause more problems and 3) don't be so arrogant.

What in particular? Or do your downvote reasons cover that?

        mark merrens wrote:

Interesting. Not sure I've seen him agree to do that. What I have seen him say is that univotes are uncommon, they would cause sock puppet accounts, and they may inhibit people from giving honest downvotes for fear of retaliation.

        mark merrens wrote:

And you downvote opinions you do not agree with?

Life forms are unique in that they can reasonably predict the future. They may not always be correct, but they can be pretty good at it. I can guess at (or estimate) what kinds of problems it would cause.

        mark merrens wrote:

I don't think that is the word your are looking for. Either that, or you expect me to put "I think" in front of my every opinion, which I do not. Also, the opinions I expressed were not only my own... I was also giving a quick rundown of the responses seen in SB&S.

By the way, I am one of the people who have posted about voting mechanisms. Though that particular post was about articles (and Chris did end up implementing the deviation feature with articles). I do have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about, and [I think] most suggestions for improvements new members might make have been posted before or would be a waste of Chris & Team's time.

Let's keep with the standard defintion for martyr. Rape is very tragic, but it doesn't make anyone a martyr.

Initial post was ok, but bordering Soapbox to my liking because it was predictable how it would turn out.

I did not vote your post, but I have to get this out: I don't get why the poster got downvoted for saying a gang rape victim was a martyr based on semantics while people get rep points for saying technically correct stupid things.... Again, too heavy a subject (or easy to predict it would become so) for the Lounge I agree. But the number of times people get their reputation upgraded by saying they would kill end users, that VB developers deserve life sentences, that it's the end of the world because a list starts at 1... It makes me a little sick that this is the subject that makes it impossible to use hyperbole in the Lounge. Even if I agree it should not have been here in the first place.

Not sure, though did she actually die for her cause? That is what a martyr is.

Technicaly correct, but on a forum where it is routinely moraly correct (and rewarded)to make someone suffer a painful death for using a goto, a buzzword or not understanding what you meant with your UI. This is the one example where first degree must be law? X|

Sorry, wrong word. Modern day hero? To be gangraped by 8 men at 15, and to persist regardless, takes a hell of a lot of "attitude" man, you gotta admire that. Fair enough ?

I don't consider it heroic either, but it's your post, not mine. Sorry if I was ridiculously technical. Words like brave, strong, and bold come to mind. Those would be words I'd pin on a woman like that. I like those words better than martyr because lots of idiots are martyrs. You've got people who blow up entire planes full of people and they are 'martyrs' and to my thinking that has nothing to do with bravery or strength. Sometimes martyr means 'cowardly bastard'.

Saying that VB developers deserve life sentences is obvious hyperbole over a goofy topic; however, serious topics shouldn't be handled with hyperbole. The woman doesn't need hyperbole to describe her situation. I probably shouldn't have responded. I knew what the orginal OP meant. If you want to downvote, do so - it makes me a martyr. :-D

I won't, mouhahahah! :-) Seriously I understood, understand your post, and stil don't want to downvote it. I also said I didn't feel the original post belonged in here, but since it was here, I had a hard time with the responses. But I now realize I shoud have focussed more on the it doesn't belong in this forum part. Mea Culpa.

And I have had quite a few posts with Chris about this and he has said that he has a possible solution and I (and others) have also offered what we thought might be reasonable solutions. A waste of this time?
