Is there any point in helping resolve IT issues to people who either don't know how or do not want to use Google search? Just one question that bothered me through years, when some just seemingly love wasting time of others or being naturally lazy and/or stupid...?

Sometimes is pure laziness, sometimes (I've found myself in this case several times) as my mother language differs from english for me is not very clear to search for the right words and then, being Internet so big it makes it difficult to know what to search. Apart of that, when you are really novice it is also difficult to know how to search even in help systems so sometimes it is not so easy... Of course there is the other coin side: people who are so lazy that ask for help without trying to make a step... So for me it is really difficult to answer your question, have you searched the answer in Google? (that was a joke)

Ok so I had not considered that aspect, I just thought they were stupid bastards too lazy to use a search engine. So LMGTFY may actually be helping someone, make me feel a whole lot better, however I don't think that can be the case, as I have just entered the OPs question to get a result.

Yes, I see several points. Google or 1000 pages of reference and documentation will not help very much if you don't know the name of the thing you are looking for or wether or not it exists at all. Not everybody is a master detective who can deduce what he is looking for by following some vague hints he found in the internet. Another thing no search will ever offer is the comfort in 'talking' to another person. The simple feeling that someone else gives a damn for what you are doing and gives you a push in the right direction may be enough for many not to give up and carry on. Besides that, a different opinion from another angle can never hurt when you are stuck. And I, for my part, have long forgotten what it is like to have more questions than answers. That makes me a bad judge of worthy or unworthy questions. Telling somebody how dumb he is may actually be more work than sharing your wisdom, especially if it just means finding a good article or tutorial for him. So why not simply stay polite?

If that is the case... then probably the best is not a LMGTFY... probably the best is something that is not KSS neither SFW...

10! When searching on the Web you can't say "this is what I want to do" or "this is the trouble I'm having". But you can here. And some times you read through a bunch of poorly-written blog posts with bad examples and it just makes things worse.

Yeah :) As of today, the last Google indexer accounts for 8.2 billion pages, there gotta be at least something useful ;)

<... some just seemingly love wasting time of others or being naturally lazy and/or stupid> Most of the people you think are one or all of those things probably aren't. You, being an IT guru, probably search Google 100 times per day like the rest of us and are well versed in the art of picking relevant search terms and picking useful results from irrelevant dross given a line or two of summary. It's not that easy for everyone. For some people, searching Google to resolve IT issues isn't what they're good at and isn't the best use of their time - they may even make things worse... Sometimes it's just best to ask the experts - that's you, and if it's your job to sort out their IT issues don't begrudge it, even if it is frustrating sometimes...

CM steadfastly refuses to add a sarcasm smiley and I have been smacked a couple of times for being too sharp with idiots so I tend to ignore the blatantly stupid and lazy questions. I rarely venture into the QA section so the temptation to lambaste some questions are avoided :)

It's been written: water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink. Such is the Internet.
