    I'm not sure what it is. I know shrimp, whiting, clams, and things like fish sticks don't have it. Tuna doesn't either. Everything else has the same weird flavor to it. I don't know if there is something that makes some have it, and others not, but it would be helpful in selecting it in the future.

      I'm not very good with fish. I don't really like them that much so far, but I've been tasting more of them to see what I do like. I've found that whiting is nice. I generally taste the same "tone" or mild flavor in all seafood I've tried, and it's what I don't like about it. Shrimp does not have this flavor either, but so far whiting is the only fish I've found that doesn't. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? What makes whiting different from the other fish?

      Whiting aren't fish. It's a type of insect, closely related to the locust. I can write a find a wiki page to prove it, if you like... :laugh:

        You probably don't live near a very fresh supply of seafood (I know whereabouts you reside, and I know Chicago isn't much better, except fresh fish does get flown into nice places here often). Anyways, to me, it sounds like a problem of freshness. See if you can find any local Tilapia farmers. I know of one NW of Chicago that uses a hydroponic farming + Tilapia farming in a symbiotic relationship. Just get fresh fish, and most good fresh fish does not taste fishy, except catfish I think.

        This sounds pretty valid. I will look around for some fresh fishies and try them to test the flavor.

          catfish can taste like mud (though the farm-raised stuff i've been getting doesn't), but i've never had it taste 'fishy'.

            I was a vegetarian :D I am sticking with the meat because I feel amazing during workouts when I eat fish and/or chicken for lunch. Fish is very noticeable, more so than chicken. Pork and beef don't really have an impact at all for workouts, so I don't eat that stuff.

              True, I agree. Some people take any gamey, earthy, or other uncommon taste as gross, so I threw it out as warning for someone grossed out by the "fish" taste to probably just avoid catfish, too. I happened to love eating catfish, and I hate fishy fish.

                'whiting' is kind of a generic name for many different kinds of fish - depending on where you get it. so it's hard to say exactly what it is you're getting. in the north-eastern US, 'whiting' might be haddock or cod or one of several related species. in the north-west, it could be pollock (also related to haddock & cod).

                  Very true, the fishy taste only shows up in less-fresh fish. I remember reading somewhere it has something to do with the break down of a protein that occurs in high concentration in fish because of something about the way their muscles work (it's present in non-fish too, just in low concentrations). I don't remember all the details, but basically the sooner you eat it the less fishy the fish will be.

                    I wouldn't mind trying that at least once. There must be something to it with all the effort people are willing to put into the preparation to make it "safe" for consumption.

                          Whiting is a cheap, poor man's fish. It is usually used at amusement parks and cheap reastaurants and street vendors. It's good but not that good.                                 He's a long way from any fresh fish aside from some farms. Tilapia is great, I cooked mine with lots of Cumin and Cheyenne, a little mustard powder.

                                  I was a vegetarian :D I am sticking with the meat because I feel amazing during workouts when I eat fish and/or chicken for lunch.                                         I could also be one of the unlucky few who gets killed by lightning, a car accident, or any number of things. Unless the numbers are significant I wouldn't worry myself with that. I'll die someday and there's not a thing I can do about it, might as well enjoy life.
