Car GPS : Computer programmable ?

I've used various TomTom for about eight years, and I find it pretty easy. Tap the screen, tab "Navigate to" and it's pretty obvious. One thing it's worth doing is adding the places you want to go to as favourites, then its just one more tap and select the name from a list and it's off working it out. I don't see it could get much easier. Heck Michelle can use it (and she can't even cope with a paper map without rotating it to match where her head is pointing!) :wtf:

Howdy' My parents will be doing a long car trip (northern Québec and Ontario) in a couple of weeks. I really want them to get where they want to go and come back safe. Any suggestions for a good easy to use and program car GSP system ? I've used a small Garmin nuvi model, but it was aggravating to program (on the device). I'm looking for something that could be programmed from a computer (if possible) and _easy_ to use and handled. Are there major differences between Garmin or TomTom ? Thanks.

Why do you need to have it programmable? At least the TomTom does nearly perfectly all for what is was designed to. Cheers!

Just remember not to have a favourite address labelled "Home".
TomTom has a default location called "home", which it sets pretty much when you turn the device on for the first time, IIRC. Fortunately, mine is set to the place I park the car not to the house (to prevent it trying to navigate on the wrong side of the river, which some GPSes do from the postcode). And you can't find the house unless you know where it is (it's some kind of Harry Potter thing, I think)

I don't want to "reprogram" it, just to be able to set locations and way points from a computer instead of the usually bad UI on the device itself. Ideally, they could use something like google/bing map and search location on the web, place markers on the map, and upload all of that to the device.

Ok, I've got it. As far as I know, TomTom has a limitation of 50 way points for one route. This is due to their import data format (I forgot the name of that format).

I use a TomTom and my Galaxy S2. The TomoTom is quite an old one(over 5 years old) and excellent - if you get a TomTom I suggest you get one with 'itinerary planning' on it. This will allow you to plot waypoints along your route so that you go the way you want to go rather than the suggested route. The Galaxy S2 is good as it is driven by google maps although I would say that the TomTom beats it simply due to it having more options.

For the last 7 years, we've been using Nuvi 350's, but we're upgrading this week to Nuvi 50LM's (lifetime free map updates) with a 5-inch screen. Old eyes, and all that... Only $119 each from Amazon.

50 waypoints is more than you should ever need for one journey. 3-5 waypoints should generally be more than enough to get you to your destination - tomtom will fill in the gaps in between the waypoints.

I use a Garmin, never had any problems with it. But I don't find it particularly hard to use the interface, so I've never tried programming it (did add a custom voice and some new car icons, now I'm being given directions from GLaDOS and driving the bat mobile).

Spelling for one. Truth is, I've had both of 'em over the years. I never used either of them for about nine months or more. When I switched on the TomTom it was dead and the battery failed to charge and hold it for more than a few minutes. When I switched on my Nuvi 660 it's battery was still 80% or more charged and it was good to go for a few more hours. Battery favours the Garmin (in my case). Programming I found to be slightly better on my 660. I know now't 'bart Traffic updates but I found the detour option on the 660 to be easier. I'm no power user of GPS devices so I found both to be usable and both do some things better than the other.
