There is no such thing as best. It depends on what you are looking for, what functions you require, how much you want to spend, your your personal preferences are, blah blah blah. Go and have a pop over at http://www.avforums.com/[^] you can find alot of reviews and others thoughts there.

how much $$$ are you willing to pay ? the sky's the limit. how big is your room ? can you install more than 2,3 speakers ? The easy answer would be to buy a simple hometheater 5.1 or 7.1 package from Sony. I've always had good dealings with Rotel systems (not home theater), but my dream would be to get a high-end LINN system, or Classé Audio system, but I don't have the physical space at home currently to have it (and the $$% !)

Take a look at Bang & Olufsen[^] equipments. Their products are amazing, chekc their sound devices and the beolab5. Of course you've not put a limit to the price, but their products are thought to the maximum and are conceived to be perfect in many senses.

I have very happy with my Okyno receiver. It was quite a few benjamins. My speakers are not up to snuff but I am going to sound deaden the room before investing in high quality units. Unfortunately, with speakers, there is no limit to the amount you can spend. Just get a good center and realize that if you buy a kit, well, heh. Also, make sure your receiver passed audio through the HDMI inputs. Some don't!

Out of curiosity, why do you want pass-through HDMI on the receiver? Isn't the point of the stereo to play the audio? Why do you want to bypass the stereo and send the audio to the destination device along with the video?

Don't blame me. I voted for Chuck Norris.

Sorry I mistyped, From Wiki: "Some low-cost AV receivers, such as the Onkyo TX-SR506, do not support audio processing over HDMI and are labelled as "HDMI pass through" devices" Make sure yours processes sound in the receiver from HDMI otherwise it is worthless IMHO. Not a question I asked on my first receiver, but a fault my second receiver didn't share.
