I regularly need to cleanup my desktop with number of icons almost filles it in a space of 2 weeks.Mostly work related files and tools and shortcuts. Do you keep your desktop clean or let it get filled with as many icons as it can ?

My desktop is incredibly organised. I have shortcut groupings, folders containing groups of shortcuts (accessed with KO Approach[^], and all manner of organisational rules for the layout of the shortcuts -- which are maintained in position, even after Windows ****s up the desktop, with Iconoid[^]) I leave spaces near the top left corner of the screen, so that I always know exactly where stuff that I save to the desktop will be, and I always arrange my open windows so that the most-used shortcuts are always accessible (using folders helps with this). All in all, I'm beginning to think that it's time I got a fruggin' life.

I just let the desktop to be filled with the icons. Once there's no space to breath for icon I will make a folder called desktop and moving all the wastes inside. As my per my observation/analysis we keeps 60% of waste on the desktop hoping to be usable in future but it don't.

I tend to keep things of current interest on the Desktop. I also tend to forget to remove them, so it gets as cluttered as my real desktop, which is currently buried in crap. When I run out of space on my PC desktop, I'm usually due for an upgrade and that eliminates most of the clutter. But I'm still stuck with this incredibly messy desk...

Currently 160 files in 8 dirs  But anyway I don't show the icons on the desktop and use a file manager that is actually useful, so that's not really an issue for me. It's just so convenient to drop some not so important files there, as it's visible with every open/save/move file dialog :)

I always keep my desktop clean. I have many applications and placing them on desktop would make it look dirty and I hate to search for a tiny link in the middle of a junkyard. I prefer to put everything on start menu so I can browse links systematically and there's also a search feature on win 7. If an application is very frequently used, I would create a link and drop it on C:\Windows so I can just press Win+R, type ff, press enter and poof! Here come Firefox.

Computer, Recycle Bin. Occasionally temporary files/shortcuts (30 min duration). Recently added Sound (using 2 sound cards and swapping the default between headset/speakers quite often) and Task Scheduler (I seem to have problems actually waking up to my phone alarm, weirdly it seems someone presses the stop button instead of snooze so I start Winamp with some noisy guitars). Everything else - was quick launch, now taskbar and using the Star Menu. Turns out you don't actually need that many handy shortcuts, anything used often enough ends up in the "most used" list on start menu anyway. And yes, I used to have organized full desktop initially. Too much work.

I tend to use the desktop as a temporary folder. I run programs I use most from the taskbar. I mostly tidy my desktop when I change machines, dumping my old desktop into a folder called Old Desktop and putting it on my desktop.

All my icons are on the left half of my desktop. They get restructured as necessary. Part of the right half of my desktop has a picture of my favorite God.

330 million and you were able to choose just one as your favourite? I've still not worked out which one was my favourite Spice Girl.

:-) Well, at least for my generation (I am 47 years old), there's sometimes the concept of a "Home God", which is the primary deity worshiped at home, so that becomes the favorite God.

I prefer none. The few that are there (because the system won't allow me to remove them) I have hidden. I shudder whenever I see a Windows system that looks like a Macintosh. X|
