Lance has been served notice by the USADA that they're going to pursue him for doping allegations. I don't know if anyone can really be neutral in this story that's washed in and out with the tide over several years now. Me, I choose to believe that he's innocent. By golly, he must have been one of the world's most tested sportsmen. I also suspect Floyd Landis and the French media have been mischievous in spreading rumours about Lance over the years. Here's the official USADA document: Charges[^] Of course, there's no smoke without fire. Hopefully, Lance will once and for all be vindicated. The number of big guns aimed at him in the past have failed to fire so one more isn't a problem.

It's easy to make smoke without fire. There original phrase was "There is no fire without some smoke" and means that there is always some observable consequence to an action.

I keep wondering if they should just allow performance enhancing drugs - it'd level the playing field (presumably the point of a ban anyway), and eliminate the need for checks which are both costly and damaging to an athletes reputation. Maybe only allow performance enhancers which are proven not to have horrific side effects to make sure there are fewer medical downsides...

I don't see how he can continue to maintain that he has nothing to hide, while insisting on hiding every time they ask him to come in. If he's willing to blah blah all day and night to the media about how innocent, victimised and awesome he is and how we should as a race generally stroke his hair and pull his mickey and feed him low-fat ice cream, why won't he talk to the bods who actually matter? He's an overrated, dope-using, lying, manipulative, relentless self-publicist. The Mick Jagger of the cycling world. I have no time for him, cancer or no cancer. He has used everything in his life as a story, in order to build himself up as a latter-day messiah and arbiter of all that is true and good, when millions have battled waaaay more than he has, with less help and less fanfare. All my mates are huge fans, in triathlon clubs and all that, they read his books and talk rubbish about their ATP uptake as they sit around in the pub watching footie and drinking cider. I hope he gets done.

I too dabbled in pacifism once.

No denying he's the most successful rider, by a long shot, or was (I don't really keep up with it as much as i used to) but all the other crap kinda cancels it out, in my opinion.

I kinda meant "oohhh! He rides a bike!" in an excessively sarcastic manner, as in I don't give a hoot. Personally I feel that, if the authorities suspect him of taking drugs, then fine, investigate, but why all the publicity? surely there is some innocence until proven stuff, even in the exhilarating sport of riding a pushbike?

Thin end of the wedge, start this and shortly you will have the cyborg olympics. It then becomes like an arms race, who can develop the most effective enhancing chemical or the most efficient prosthetic. I'm just dismayed that these highly trained athletes are so fragile, they have already gone beyond where a human is still robust!

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

That sounds pretty good to me - imagine the extra industry that there would be around the development of a super drug or a Darth Vader style prosthetic! I would think there could be medical advantages to understanding such technologies - if you could for example artificially grow muscle, this could possibly be applied to things like regrowing limbs. Being able to artificially make a heart stronger for athletics could translate into a way to lower heart disease in the general population. There's taboo around these sorts of things, but as a pragmatist I find it hard to think where the biggest downsides are after mitigating health risks?
