Smart and/or stupid?

On the evolutionary scale you will be exactly where we all have been for all our overseeable history. We have moved on a little since our ancestors climbed off the trees, but our ancestors who still lived in caves already were pretty much the same model as it is still in production. When you implement something, you obviously understand the technology involved. This increases the gap between you and those people who become more and more dependent on such technology without understanding it.
At least artificial intelligence already is superior to natural stupidity

However, if you consider the point of evolution is to pass on your genes, automating your house so you control it from your phone is probably a step down the tree.

Thank you! My question was more of a rhetorical one, whether automating simplest routines gives us any credit or more likely to devolve us.

One guy published an article here about controlling home gadgets from his mobile, which made me wonder... If I am to implement an online app that lets me switch my kettle on or off, I wonder in which direction it would move me, on the evolutionary scale - up or down? Kind-of reminds of the old Music video: Lazy[^]

Thank you! My question was more of a rhetorical one, whether automating simplest routines gives us any credit or more likely to devolve us.
Decadence can mean the end of cultures and empires, but it usually does not last long enough to 'devolve' us. And decadent people usually live in blissful ignorance and enjoy it while it lasts.

Neither, unless you could find a way to online fill it with the right amount of water first. I suspect that in a strange way it moves us upwards. Every invention we have created has been to do something more easily that we did it before: Fire to make eating easier, the wheel to make moving things easier. The gun to make killing each other easier. So looked at that way, it is a sign of higher intelligence and thus evolution to make anything easier! I remember what it was like before remote controls for TV's - all that tedious walking across the room to change from one cr@p channel to another cr@p channel. Now, I can just flick through from the comfort of my sofa, decide there is nothing watch-able on, and do something more worthwhile in a tenth the time! :-D

That was why people had children. Felt like that when I was a kid anyway, my brother and I were the remote control. I remember the first one I ever saw, at a girl's 11th birthday party, she was the rich kid. The remote control was attached the the TV by a very long cable. We watched Ferris Bueller. I didn't get it then.
