Kindle, E-reader, Tablet, which one?

Hi All, I'm looking to buy a means of reading books with out the dead wood. My first thought was Kindle (I'm in the UK) like most every one else. But having chatted to a guy on the train he said well you email the books to it and it can show jpegs but he was a little unsure of it showing PDF's. Firstly I have a load of PDF's that I need to carry around (manuals mostly) and I am a bit of a reader as some you might know from comments I have made, really I just want something I can plug into a PC copy over some PDF's and may be the odd eBook, I don't need email, web browsing (Smartphone!) or full Laptop/Netbook. Just something to read all manner of book. Glenn :confused:

Problem of Space, As it stands my collection (or library if you will) has filled one room spilled into another and the loft is getting over loaded, can't get the car in garage any more, Library books are either read, out of date, smell funny.

Kindle can handle PDFs. The email conversion thing is you can email certain files to your kindle's email address (not real email) and Amazon will convert it and forward it to your kindle for you. I think you can connect to PC to copy over files, although I have never done this, generally I just buy books from Amazon and they get whispered to it. I bloody loves it I do.

Hmmm, the direct connection to PC's rather than another Email address but the PDF thing is good.

Kindle You can read pdf's You can copy any file from a pc but it will only read Mobi(and amazon's version) pdf's text, word a a good few others if you have a book in another format (ie sony) it will need converting - Colibri (free software) will convert between formats its not colour but I find that rarely an issue. the bigger question is which kindle Kindle - small size, huge amounts of books 2 -3 weeks battery (love mine) Kindle keyboard - bigger footprint, twice the books, 4-6 weeks battery - a button keyboard - much better if you intend to make notes etc (never used it other than wifi password - happy to give it up for the smaller size of the kindle) keindle touch - as the kindle but a screen swip to change pages (tried it in waterstones was not impressed - i prefered the buttons) only thing i dislike is the library structure/maintainance - it assumes you will use Amazon cloud imo, otherwise a bit clunky

Try this[^] Kindle help page, lists valid file types, confirms can connect via usb and drag and drop, confirms PDF reader and other stuff too.

I got a Samsung Note specifically for the large screen to be used as a reader. Does an excellent job and an added bonus, the wife rarely has to remind me to take the blasted phone with me!

OK, the issue is will it need all .pdf converting to Mobi I was taken with the a Sony thing that just read straight pdf's Glenn

I use one of the basic kindle (the one with no keyboard), it's cheap (*) enough that I don't care too much about it (theft, breakage, ... ) I've used it while traveling, planes, trains and automobile, on the beach, on terrassse, in restaurants. Best tech-buy of the last few months. (**) One issue with PDF (as far as I know) is that the pages do not render well and you will have to scroll the pages often, they will not be auto-magically reformatted. But you can convert them to a more kindle friendly format. I've started using Calibre[^] to manage my books and convert PDF (I'm not done with the whole process, so I can't tell you how well it works. (*) not quite as cheap as I'd like it to be, but getting there. (**) the only downer is that the display is not backlit, so you cannot read in the dark.
Watched code never compiles.

However this 'Kindle on Steriods" is far more capable (and too darn large to fit in my bag) I do have Plastic Tablet and dry wipe pen while I am waiting for the slate tab and chalk! Glenn

You know I found that exact same problem with my previous format (I thick thay were called books or something) now I just use a £5 led book light

Very easy to read on a sunny beach though!

What I meant is that the computer I am writing on is necessary for me to achieve my work and my employer wants me to use it. eBook readers are gadgets with a very reliable alternative, which is a paper book. As for carrying 1000000 books, how many books do you read at a time ?

I have a Kindle and I love it. I have a Sony reader too but I like he Kindle better.

currently I have about 5 or 6, a fiction, 2 reference books, a history book , a comical novel and a draft of a friends ebook (actually i have a few more fiction books depending on my mood)
