However this 'Kindle on Steriods" is far more capable (and too darn large to fit in my bag) I do have Plastic Tablet and dry wipe pen while I am waiting for the slate tab and chalk! Glenn

Glenn the point I was making was that he was using a PC whilst condemming you for wanting a kindle

Hi All, I'm looking to buy a means of reading books with out the dead wood. My first thought was Kindle (I'm in the UK) like most every one else. But having chatted to a guy on the train he said well you email the books to it and it can show jpegs but he was a little unsure of it showing PDF's. Firstly I have a load of PDF's that I need to carry around (manuals mostly) and I am a bit of a reader as some you might know from comments I have made, really I just want something I can plug into a PC copy over some PDF's and may be the odd eBook, I don't need email, web browsing (Smartphone!) or full Laptop/Netbook. Just something to read all manner of book. Glenn

What I meant is that the computer I am writing on is necessary for me to achieve my work and my employer wants me to use it. eBook readers are gadgets with a very reliable alternative, which is a paper book. As for carrying 1000000 books, how many books do you read at a time ?

Which you all read at the same time ? And even so, 6 is far less than 1000000.

I use one of the basic kindle (the one with no keyboard), it's cheap (*) enough that I don't care too much about it (theft, breakage, ... ) I've used it while traveling, planes, trains and automobile, on the beach, on terrassse, in restaurants. Best tech-buy of the last few months. (**) One issue with PDF (as far as I know) is that the pages do not render well and you will have to scroll the pages often, they will not be auto-magically reformatted. But you can convert them to a more kindle friendly format. I've started using Calibre[^] to manage my books and convert PDF (I'm not done with the whole process, so I can't tell you how well it works. (*) not quite as cheap as I'd like it to be, but getting there. (**) the only downer is that the display is not backlit, so you cannot read in the dark.

              Watched code never compiles.

Your two sub-points are good, Cheap (I once got a phone upgrade because I kept loosing mine and they ran out of replacements, shame the contract ended), I have trouble reading in the dark anyway (dang light evolved eyes!) Glenn

difference between being read and capacity, I have actually over 400 books on my kindle, can you imagine carrying that lot about!

My point was that among all tech goodies, eBooks just rank first ( together with the electronic picture frame ) on my uselessness scale. And that buying such a useless thing to "save dead wood" is even more silly.

Agreed. I was given a bunch of free stuff, ended up with 1400 books. Makes going on holiday a doddle, instead of a couple of kilos of deadwood, I have something that fits in my pocket and weighs as much as a boiled egg.

Price, Reliability, Ubiquity, Selection, Readability in harsh/bright light. Also, kindle screws up they just replace, Sony screws up and it is the beginning of a surreal customer care nightmare. (I use the term customer care in place of the "F*** You Arsehole" that Sony seems to think it means).

Kindle You can read pdf's You can copy any file from a pc but it will only read Mobi(and amazon's version) pdf's text, word a a good few others if you have a book in another format (ie sony) it will need converting - Colibri (free software) will convert between formats its not colour but I find that rarely an issue. the bigger question is which kindle Kindle - small size, huge amounts of books 2 -3 weeks battery (love mine) Kindle keyboard - bigger footprint, twice the books, 4-6 weeks battery - a button keyboard - much better if you intend to make notes etc (never used it other than wifi password - happy to give it up for the smaller size of the kindle) keindle touch - as the kindle but a screen swip to change pages (tried it in waterstones was not impressed - i prefered the buttons) only thing i dislike is the library structure/maintainance - it assumes you will use Amazon cloud imo, otherwise a bit clunky

What Dave said and: I am able to use the Kindle to read email Watch videos Listen to music View pictures More responsive Cheaper I have not actualy bought a book yet for it as you can get tons of free books from Amazon. New stuff too not just the public domain classics. better battery life Better readability I do not remember if the Sony is backlit or not but the Kindle is. For full disclosure, I have a Kindle Fire. The more basic models may be what you are wanting. I think the base version is 90 USD and the Sony I got was 600 USD at the time I got it, the Fire was 200 USD.

I've got 0 experience with that, but whatever you choose at the end be sure to get a display like the one is used in kindle, which won't give you headache after a while of reading.

I had the same thought about 3 month ago, picked up the best Kindle that was suggested and ordered it. But next day I found out: 1. To have my books as Kindle version, not only i'd have to buy them again, but some of them would cost me more than hard copy that I bought  2. Most books that they convert for developers, pieces of code are of very low quality, converted into images, so you can't even copy'n paste them...what kind of electgronic copy is that... On the second day I cancelled my order. Kindle, as a device, is great, but everything that stands behind it sucks big time, that's why they fail to make a big impact on the market.

Glenn

You can e-mail PDF's to the Kindle (free delivery if connected via WiFi, costs a small amount through 3G). With changing orientation, reading PDF's usually works well. However, PDF's with complex graphics often fail to display correctly. I love my Kindle because it's perfect for reading, and the occasional(!) stint into wikipedia. No fun for surfing, though.

Let's agree to disagree! Boris the animal Just Boris.

That'S the rule. eBooks are more expensive than normal ones.
