I finally won one!

With all the stuff we need for the new house, one thing is a dining room table. Michelle has had me in and out of a dozen furniture shops all day looking at many different things, including tables. (I managed to escape with only buying a quilt, a standard lamp and a headboard for the bed). However, she has been pointing at and sitting at a load of expensive dining room tables. I was aghast at the prices of some of these. I mean, nice as they are, I feel they are rather overpriced. Having got home and firing up the interwebs I have shown her some antique dining room tables. I have convinced her that rather than spending £1800 on a new table, I can get a George II Cuban Mahogany, (circa 1750) for maybe half the price. She also saw a William and Mary Rosewood linen chest (1690's) for £700. I think I have convinced her that old furniture is much better than new stuff. We are off to a dealers next week to look over a few choice pieces.

Being someone who can actually make furniture, I just get pissed off when visiting places like Ikea. How can people consider lumps of chipboard, stitched together with minimal metal fixings, worthy of a place in their home? Second-hand shops are a much better source of decent wooden furniture.

Check if there is a charity furniture shop near you, I'd guess there is, as you'll be amazed at what you find. A friend recently kitted out a two bedroom for under a grand.

The victory of IKEA: cheap, practical, not antique. Perfect for people who don't know yet where they'll be living next year.

Nice... I'm not that talented, even though woodworkers are in my family (my dad is a cabinet maker and my grandad was a carpenter)... I love wooden furniture, particularly recycled timber stuff... And I have a local furniture store who specialises in it (and can also custom make stuff for me if needed), where I can purchase beautiful solid recycled timber furniture for around the same price as the horrible particle-board stuff from the chain stores...

Preach it, brother! :) We have an alcove in our bedrooms and I built a bifold door wardrobe in ours and it was one of the best woodwork projects I ever did. It'll last the lifetime of the house which is more than I could say about an Ikea-tat product. Plus, I also saved money not having to be force-fed those disgusting Swedish-style meatballs manufactured in a skip near a seedy lock-up under a railway arch in a rundown area in London. To be honest though, we did purchase our table and chairs from Collingwood Batchellor which were priced down in a clear out sale. The construction quality is excellent. The dovetails are clearly done by hand. The table was made by an independent workshop and oozes quality. The mechanism that brings the centre extension into position is a work of art. We got it and the six chairs for under £900. Knowing a little about quality woodworking convinces me that traditional skills are still to be found. By all means buy old and that's wonderful; but there are modern tables available which are just as excellent - just stay away from Ikea and their meatballs made from vomit.

The charity shops are called "kringloopwinkels", here. I've bought two or three cubic yards of oak from them, fashioned into beautiful, craftsman-made, sturdy furniture, for a lot less than the cost price of the wood itself.
