Yes quite nice! As the US decided to avoid building a particle accelerator in 1993 http://www.businessweek.com/news/2012-06-19/europe-overtakes-u-dot-s-dot-in-pursuing-god-particle[^] and are busy cutting funds for science and creating new taxes : http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/06/07/nasa-kills-x-ray-telescope-blames-project-cost/[^] the discovery has been done at the CERN.
You can't turn lead into gold, unless you've built yourself a nuclear plant.
Let's not bring nationalities into it. What the scientiststs did was a fantastic achievement, and has been accomplished because many countries put petty squabbles to one side to work together to advance human knowledge. This is humanity at its best.

There's a lot less of the "our country did it first!" stuff than you'd expect at the hard edge of science. Science guys only get political (internally and externally) when they're promoted* to administrative roles. Not a million miles away from the software-development world, really.
* Personally, I wouldn't call a move to management a promotion

CERN is a multi-national endeavour. There are scientists, mathematicians and engineers from all over the world and it is a team effort. Spurious nationalism on a project of this scale is disingenuous and insulting to all of them. (Although there is smugness from me in the fact that Peter Higgs was English! (And even more smugness from you as he was born in Newcastle)).

All the interviews I've read with him, the thing that comes across is how humble he is. He formulated a theorem that was staggering in implication, and he treats it as though anyone could have done it.

Saw this quote on Twitter last night; "Having the essence of the universe named after you puts any shite named a Beiber into context doesn't it".

Disagree. This quest will eventually prove fruitful and the fruit is poisonous. We are fucking with things we should not be messing with. I know many here will disagree with me but in my gut, I know I'm right.

This reminds me of a famous quotation by Carl Sagan, on being asked if he thought there was life elsewhere in the universe, to which he replied that he didn't know. He was then asked what was his gut feeling about it. His response was: "You know, I try not to think with my gut."

Bullshit answer on Carl's part. I think with my gut, all the time. My gut is always right, my brain is not.

Wait. Isn't that named a Higgs Boson? :)

Yeah, and I guess you support the metric system, the Tobin Tax and UK joining the euro... ;P ;P ;P

I'd be curious to know where you found this quote. Indeed, if you read Carl Sagan's book Cosmos, he wrote a chapter about experiments that were conducted to recreate primal earth environment. He seems to be quite positive on the fact life can emerge easily given the right conditions. He also played a major role in setting up the SETI program. He also wrote about how he became interested on those topics very early in his life, and this was the driving force that lead him to follow his path.

I wasn't born in Newcastle, but I live there. (Nowhere near England.) It would really be hard for me to be born here because I'm 40 years older than the town. (We do have old abandoned coal mines that sometimes colapse in someone's back yard. Probably why the name was picked.)
