So after Staffs police held a coach load of passengers at gunpoint for an hour or two after an electric cigarette in a passenger's bag gave off some vapours yesterday an aerial photo has been released showing the response. Here[^] Now, I am most upset because I drove right by there (on a normal road, not the toll) as it was ongoing and didn't realise the fun or I would have stopped for a watch. But what on earth were 18 fire appliances going to do if 1 coach did indeed blow up? Even if it was at the toll plaza?

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends. Shed Petition[^]

So why was the immediate action taken to bring in the police rather than a team of fire fighters? If I saw something that looked like smoke on a bus my first reaction would be to get everyone off the bus and call the fire brigade, thinking that there was a fire

I think they thought someone was busy building a bomb in their bag rather than actually on fire.

Why this happens was explained back in 1969... I want tell you about the town of Stockbridge, Massachusets, where this happened here, they got three stop signs, two police officers, and one police car, but when we got to the Scene of the Crime there was five police officers and three police cars, being the biggest crime of the last fifty years, and everybody wanted to get in the newspaper story about it. And they was using up all kinds of cop equipment that they had hanging around the police officer's station. They was taking plaster tire tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, and they took twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against us. Took pictures of the approach, the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that's not to mention the aerial photography.

The person to whom the aforementioned device belonged to was a muslim man of south asian descent. So obviously given the recent history of terrorism, he was assumed to be a terrorist rather than a man desperate to stop smoking.

Because this is the age of terrorism! Soon enough, if your house catches fire, the anti-terror brigade will be called in to monitor the smoke to make sure it isn't a toxic or biologic attack. The police will be called in to take you into custody on suspicion of an attack, just incase you try to skip the country. Then an investigator will poke through the remains to search for traces of explosives that might have caused the fire. Two weeks later after your home long past the stage of smoldering ruin will the fire department be allowed in to make sure it is well and truely no longer a threat of burning down. I think I'm joking, but after writing all of that, I'm not so sure anymore. :sigh:

Just imagine what would have happened if one of the passengers had just committed some crime or other and was using the bus as a getaway.
