Strange Windows 7 Behaviour

Windows 7 seems to like to move icons around as it pleases on my desktop, it's annoying. If someone has a fix that would be great.

I run a report that outputs to a file held on the Desktop. I move the icon to a specific place on the screen. When I rerun the report, it has moved the icon from where I put it to the bottom of some Icons I have on the left hand side. In XP the previous version was simply overwritten and the Icon remained where I had it before. Damned annoying! Anyone got a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling XP? Or is this a 'Feature' that I am forced to endure?

I do have about 20 icons on either of the computers that I use, but I've found that I rarely ever use them at all: most of the time I run full screen applications anyway, so I don't see the desktop. It's much more practical for me to keep relevant links in the task bar. I've also added a 'Desktop' entry to the taskbar (you can do that in the task bar properties page), which shows a menu consisting of all the shortcuts. But I have to admit it's not that helpful when you got more than a couple.

Subscribe to Digital Blasphemy[^]. Then you won't want to have icons covering your desktop.

I have always viewed the desktop as somewhere that I shouldn't put icons and shortcuts as they will nearly always be covered by one or more programs Instead I organise shortcuts/folders and icons into 2 or 3 folders that group things logically and then right click on the taskbar and add the folders as toolbars which gives me a place where I can click and select the items I want without having to clear other applications to see the desktop. If you shrink the toolbar width to its smallest setting you just get a name and >> where you click to see the sub items just another way of working that might help doh! should have read the full list of replies and seen Stefans post before I typed all this!

First introduced as a 'feature' of Vista. After a couple of years unsuccessfully trying various registry hacks and other third party "fixes", I gave up. I now have only 20-odd icons in two columns. One of them is "More", a folder containing another 100-odd shortcut icons (nicely sorted alphabetically, and they don't go walkabout!) Cheers, Peter

Whilst I do clean my desktop (Once or twice a year ;D), I get the result of your "More" folder splattered onto my Desktop. So I adapted :) Instead of trying to manually find the little bugger to click on, I simply click on an empty spot on my desktop, and quickly type the first three letters of the application / item. About 95% of the time, you'll land on the correct icon (Quickly verified by the now brightly highlighted bit), at which point you simply press enter ;P I now navigate my desktop (Frequently 150+ icons on a single screen) the same way I navigate my nicely organised hard-drives :)

That's why i don't use the icons in the desktop anymore (And prefer the search box in the Start Menu or Windows 8 "Start Page"). :)

My solution is to have no icons on the Desktop, then they never move! (Not even the Recycle Bin, I use Rainmeter and have a widget for it instead.) In fact, I only see my Desktop in the time between log on and my first program launching...

I've used fences for a good long while now, but I have noticed on my laptop they still can jump around a bit...(i use it with two different second monitors depending on location, that seems to be what sets it off.)
Common sense is not a gift it's a curse. Those of us who have it have to deal with those that don't.... Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow. You can't scare me, I have children.
Keep in mind that you can save multiple "fence" profiles for quickly returning to a specific configuration when changing monitors like that. I use fences to set my icons over two monitors, but when I remote access, I only use one. One quick setting change and I am good to go.

I don't know about that, most people I work with actually use their desktops for shortcuts and file storage. I don't even do that. I keep my most used shortcuts in the task bar, and everything else I just type in the start menu. And I abhor the idea of using the desktop for storage (it's actually this irrational aversion that moved me to my current state of a completely empty desktop).
